“This move is dark,” Kristen Stewart said at Deadline’s Sundance Studio.
In Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding, Stewart is Lou, a gym manager who falls in love with Jackie (Katy O’Brian), a bodybuilder on her way to Las Vegas. But both are ultimately sucked into the machinations of Lou’s criminal family.
“The protagonist is kind of an affable dude,” Stewart said, “but when it comes down to it there’s a kind of familial violence, that’s really in us all, because we’re no different from each other. I believe in individuality but we’re all humans and we all have the ability and the capabilities of really disgusting things. It’s also a love story that takes place in the ’80s that’s really about strength.”
Stewart said of the film’s writer-director, Rose Glass, “[She] made Saint Maud, a movie that really blew my head off, I thought it was stupendously put together, from top to bottom.”
Glass had felt moved to write a movie about “a strong woman” Stewart said, “and she literally wrote a movie about a very, very strong girl and a very, very weak girl trying to get to know each other, trying to love each other. It seems like a movie that was made in the ’80s, it’s not now. It seems kind of morally defunct and scary in a really honest way. It’s super sexy. It’s got this unique sexual fingerprint that I feel is not cinematic, because we experience those experiences so particularly in movies and this one feels very sprawling and really hyper-stylized and confronting.”
Love Lies Bleeding also stars Ed Harris, Jena Malone, Dave Franco and Anna Baryshnikov.
Love Lies Bleeding is one of two films Stewart is starring in at the festival this year, the other being Sam and Andy Zuchero’s Love Me, in which she stars opposite Steven Yeun.
