Teen dramas became an essential TV genre due to their discussion of important issues surrounding the lives of adolescents. Since teen soap operas are not educational programs, these productions rely heavily on drama to increase viewer engagement. Love triangles frustrate audiences and divide fandoms.

While some triangles offer insight into relationships and help the protagonists embark on self-discovery, others are unnecessary. To create conflict, love triangles often develop among friends to cause messier conflict. Other times, the creators break up strong couples to test their relationship and the viewer's reaction. The worst triangles have less chemistry and add nothing insightful to the plot.

10 Blair Takes Time To Let Go Of Nate (Gossip Girl)

Early on in Gossip Girl, it's established that Blair and Nate's relationship is toxic. He even cheats on her with her best friend, Serena. Still, the creators did not want to permanently endly this relationship, and Nate kept popping back into Blair's life.

Chuck had a better connection with Blair and had more in common. Whenever Chuck and Blair made progress in their relationship, Blair would return to her on-off-again relationship with Nate. Fans did not believe that the characters matured and felt their romance was forced.

9 Ms. Grundy's Relationship With Archie Is Illegal And Inappropriate (Riverdale)

Out of all the uncomfortable relationships in Riverdale, the triangle between Archie, Ms. Grundy, and his father is the most forced. Of course, the relationship was illegal because Archie was a minor, but these implications were never thoroughly discussed.

Instead, the focus is on the awkwardness of his father pursuing Ms. Grundy. Their affair messed up Archie's friendship with Jughead and hindered the Jason Blosson murder investigation. Archie has a lot going on, like music, football, and work to explore instead of this ill-suited triangle.

8 Alaric And Caroline's Relationship Creates Plot Holes (The Vampire Diaries)

Aside from Elena and the Salvatore brothers, The Vampire Diaries had many love triangles. These romantic conundrums add tension to the storyline and lead to plot development. However, Alaric and Caroline's relationship felt forced.

After Elena, Caroline and Stefan felt like a good couple, but after a time jump, it is revealed that Stefan and Caroline had broken up. Now Alaric is engaged to his former student, Caroline; she is pregnant with Alaric's dead fiancee's unborn twins. Not only was this couple disliked by most fans, but the absurd plot made the story less compelling.

7 Kurt And Karofsky's Relationship Was Far-Fetched (Glee)

A frustrating trope in teen dramas is the breaking up a great couple so they can explore a bizarre and awkward relationship. Despite the toxicity of most enemies-to-lovers relationships, they are common in popular shows like Glee.

After graduating from high school, Blaine and Kurt find new love interests. Karofsky (Kurt's bully) and Kurt briefly get together but lack chemistry. Although Kurt and Blaine had many problems in their relationship, this was a far-fetched attempt to create drama. Later in the season, Blaine and Kurt get married, proving the love triangle useless.

6 Zach Is A Weak Attempt To Stretch Out The Story (The O.C.)

The first season's love triangle between Anna, Seth, and Summer set the tone for The O.C., making other love interests on the show seem like a replication. After ruining his relationship with Summer in Season 2, she begins dating Zach. Despite Zach's likability, audiences were cheering for Seth and Summer, who had a stronger connection.

Even after Seth reunites with Summer, Zach intrusively returns to stretch out the storyline. Zach is not the only obstacle in the way of the couple, who continuously break up, but he is the most forced love interest.

5 Isaac Gets In The Way Of Maeve And Otis (Sex Education)

Sex Education explores different types of relationships, and while most fans agree with the pairings, they're still rooting for Maeve and Otis. Despite their impeccable chemistry, Otis and Maeve have a lot of work to do in their relationship.

Still, audiences are hoping for them to be endgame, but the introduction of Isaac complicated their relationship. Many viewers feel that Isaac's only role is to prevent Otis and Maeve from ending up together. Isaac also invaded Maeve's privacy and deleted the voicemail Otis left her.

4 Brooke Finds Herself In Another Love Triangle (One Tree Hill)

After the Brook-Lucas-Peyton triangle, viewers were exhausted and wanted the characters to find healthy relationships in One Tree Hill. In the end, Lucas and Peyton end up together, while Julian and Brooke get married. But Brooke and Julian's relationship was full of conflict, which made it frustrating to watch.

Julian and Alex were not suitable for each other, but Julian prioritized her over Brooke. His actions and Brooke's past relationships made her suspicious of his relationship with Alex, which only served to delay Brooke's happiness.

3 Finn Was Stuck Between Two Unhealthy Relationships (Glee)

Glee had numerous love triangles, and while most were enjoyable, Finn's flip-flopping between Quinn and Rachel dragged on and was unhealthy. Initially, Quinn appeared to be the best choice, but her relationship with Finn was full of lies and affairs.

Despite their toxic relationship, Quinn genuinely needed Finn to help deal with her pregnancy later on, which messed up his relationship with Quinn. Additionally, all three ruined each other's high school experience through constant fighting. This triangle was simply for entertainment and did not have a clear end goal.

2 Hanna And Caleb Were Always Endgame (Pretty Little Liars)

In its later seasons, Pretty Little Liars tried to shake things up by breaking up a fan-favorite couple. Hanna and Caleb's chemistry was undeniable since their first meeting. The two became inseparable and were always supportive of each other. They were also the only unproblematic ship on the show.

After a time jump, Caleb and Hanna break up, and he starts dating her best friend, Spencer. Even though Spencer asks Hanna's permission to pursue Caleb, it does not sit right with the audience. Once Hanna returns after her abduction, Spencer encourages Caleb to return to Hanna.

1 Emma And Spinner Stay Married Despite Not Being Love Interests (Degrassi: The Next Generation)

Degrassi: The Next Generation's love triangles often mess up the best relationships on the show. Spinner and Jane had a lot in common; they supported each other and helped each other mature. However, Jane cheats on him with Declan causing them to break up.

His friends invite him to a Niagra Falls casino to get over his break-up and the recent fire at his workplace. While drunk, Emma and Spinner, who had no prior chemistry, get married. After thinking it over, they decide they love each other out of nowhere and hold a ceremony that Jane tries to stop.
