Local author and photographer Leslie Scopes Anderson, who has collaborated on several area guidebooks, now has a new book out — just for fun.
“‘Pundora’s In-Box’ was created with the goal of putting a smile on your face in this crazy world,” Anderson said. “… I hope to bring some joy back into people’s lives after the horrendous year we have had. I’d love to make you grin, giggle, guffaw or at least do an eye-roll.”
The book showcases “pun names” — Bill Ding, Marty Graw, Fran Chise, Maggie Zeen, for example — that when said aloud can make one laugh.
“The book has a whimsical portrait and several pun names per spread, used in nutty notes, knock-knock jokes, looney lists and other forms that might be found in Pundora’s In-Box,” she said. (The illustrator is Scopes Anderson’s longtime friend Cindy Pickup.)
Scopes Anderson says she learned about the power of puns early on in life.
“Around the family dinner table, it was always a contest to see who could come up with the most pungent puns,” she said. “Usually, my Dad won.
“I started collecting pun names in the 1980s. Then, when I moved to Arcata, my new husband, Mike (an HSU professor), started coming up with them also,” Scopes Anderson said. “We had around 2,000. … I was always interested in putting them into a book and during COVID, I had extra time and a wish to spread a little joy during those dark times. Working on the book really lightened my mood.”
She added: “As a career graphic designer, I enjoyed creating this book almost as an art piece. The guidebooks were more on the scientific side.”
The guidebooks — which use her photographs and design production, along with experts’ text — are “Common Birds of the Arcata Marsh,” “A Photographic Guide to 101 Common Plants of the Arcata Marsh,” “Common Birds of Northwest California” (editions one and two) and “A Birding Guide to Humboldt County.”
“I also produced a souvenir book to raise funds for the Arcata Marsh entitled ‘Marsh Moments,’ with photographs and interesting tidbits about the plants and wildlife found there,” she said
“Pundora’s In-Box” is available now at Northtown Books in Arcata, The Booklegger in Eureka and on Amazon.com.
