OAKLAND, Calif. – Guard Mike Adewunmi, an incoming graduate transfer to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team, is currently competing in training camp for D'Tigers, the Nigerian National Team that is ranked No. 22 in the world and No. 1 in Africa, as he looks to compete in the Olympics and/or AfroBasket.
Training camp opened on Sunday under head coach Mike Brown, an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors and former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-10, 2013-14) and Los Angeles Lakers (2011-12).
Adewunmi is one of 49 players trying to make the rosters. Each roster will feature 12 players, and while players can compete in both the Olympics, which runs July 25 through Aug. 7 in Tokyo, and Afrobasket, which starts Aug. 24 in Rwanda, NBA players may be limited by rules governing the amount of international game time in which they can participate.
There are 12 current NBA players in training camp, including Precious Achiuwa (Miami Heat), Al-Farouq Aminu(Chicago Bulls), OG Anunoby (Toronto Raptors), Udoka Azubuike (Utah Jazz), Chimezie Metu (Sacramento Kings), Jordan Nwora (Milwaukee Bucks), Monte Morris (Denver Nuggets), Jahlil Okafor (Detroit Pistons), Josh Okogie(Minnesota Timberwolves), Kz Okpala (Heat), Miye Oni (Jazz), and Gabe Vincent (Heat). Additionally, Emeka Okafor, who played for Charlotte Bobcats from 2004-09, New Orleans Hornets from 2009-12, Washington Wizards in 2012-13 and New Orleans Pelicans in 2017-18, and Festus Ezeli, who was part of the Warriors from 2012-16 and the Portland Trail Blazers in 2016-17, are in training camp
Adewunmi is one of 11 current collegiate players vying for a spot, along with Efe Abogidi (Washington State), Chibuzo Agbo (Texas Tech), Warith Alatishe (Oregon State), Gideon George (BYU), Aminu Mohammed(Georgetown), Ike Ndugba (Elon), Manny Obaseki (Texas A&M), Mike Okauru (UNC Wilmington), Elijah Olaniyi(Stony Brook), and Clifford Omoruyi (Rutgers).
The training camp roster also features 23 international stars, including Abdul-Malik Abu (Fethiye, Turkey), Calab Agada (Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Israel), Joshua Ajayi (Hermine Nantes, France), Ike Diogu (Bameso, Dominican Republic), Stephen Domingo (Lakeland Magic), TK Edogi (St. Chamond, France), Amanze Egekeze (Oberhoffen, France), Obi Emegano (Fuenlabrada, Spain), Michael Eric (CSKA Moscow. Russia), Michael Gbinije (BC Nevèzíe, Lithuania), Zaid Hearst (Alba Fehervar, Hungary), Ike Iroegbu (Elan Chalon, France), U.C. Adewunmi is set to join UTRGV after playing the last two seasons at SIU Edwardsville. He started his career at Houston and playing his sophomore season at McLennan Community College.
Last season at SIUE, Adewunmi averaged 13.0 points on 47.8% shooting, including 35.4% from behind the arc, plus 73.7% from the line, and 6.1 rebounds in 26 games (25 starts).
As a junior in 2019-20, Adewunmi averaged 8.2 points on 48.4% shooting, including 36.4% from behind the arc, plus 77.0% from the line, and 5.1 rebounds in 31 games (nine starts).
As a sophomore at McLennan in 2018-19, Adewunmi averaged 11.7 points on 45.7% shooting and 4.6 rebounds in 31 games (29 starts). He twice earned North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
As a freshman at Houston in 2017-18, Adewunmi played 36 minutes across 14 games, scoring two points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Originally from Dallas, Adewunmi was ranked as a 3-star recruit by Rivals out of Lake Ridge High School. As a senior in 2016-17, Adewunmi earned All-District 10-5A First Team honors. He was an All-District 14-5A pick as a junior in 2015-16.
