OKARCHE — Residents of the Center of Family Love smiled and waved during a recent drive-by parade in their honor.
The "Share the Love" parade held Aug. 20 was the first time since March that the center's residents had seen their friends and family members due to COVID-19 quarantine precautions.
The center, a residential and vocational nonprofit that cares for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, had been closed to the public and all residents had remained on campus or in their respective homes.
The strict precautions proved necessary when two residents and three staff members tested positive for COVID-19 in May. Center leaders said no residents or staff members have tested positive since that time but they feel the serious threat remains.
With the residents' safety in mind, organizers planned the drive-by parade activities. Each participant was required to wear a mask, not stop their vehicle or throw any candy or objects from their vehicle.
"The primary concern has always been the health and well-being of the incredible individuals we serve and that includes their emotional well-being," Debbie Espinosa, the center's president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.
"For five months, our residents have not been able to see their loved ones and that can be detrimental. Since our residents aren’t able to go out in the community, the community came to us and showed just how much they love and care for CFL!”
Espinosa said about 200 parade participants lined up along 6th Street in Okarche to “Share the Love” by decorating their cars, motorcycles and corvettes with signs, balloons and streamers.
