Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, condemned crime in U.S. cities governed by Democrats during his Republican National Convention address Thursday night.
“Don’t let Democrats do to America what they have done to New York,” he urged voters in a prime-time speech that relied heavily on explosive rhetoric and violent imagery.
New York City reported 319 murders last year under Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat. In 2001, the last year of Giuliani’s mayoral tenure, there were 649. Reports of rape, robbery, assault and burglary have also decreased.
Giuliani repeatedly referenced what he described as an “unprecedented wave of lawlessness” that accompanied widespread protests against police brutality and racial injustice — echoing the Trump campaign’s efforts to stoke fears of rioters in communities across the country.
Giuliani also cast aspersions on the Black Lives Matter movement, saying it “sprang into action” with antifa — a loosely defined group of “antifascist” radical activists — “and in a flash, they hijacked the peaceful protests into vicious, brutal riots.”
“Businesses were burned and crushed. People beaten, shot and killed. Police officers routinely assaulted, badly beaten and occasionally murdered,” he said. “And the police handcuffed by progressive Democrat mayors from doing anything but observe the crimes and absorb the blows.”
Giuliani went on to allege that a vote in the November election for the Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden — whom he dubbed an “obviously defective candidate” — “creates the risk that you will bring this lawlessness to your city, town or suburb.”
“Mr. President, make our nation safe again,” Giuliani said at the conclusion of his speech, likening Trump to former presidents such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln who “were perfect for the challenges they faced.”
Giuliani’s call for law and order comes after two of his associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, were indicted last October on campaign-finance charges.
Giuliani had deployed the pair in Ukraine as part of his pressure campaign to spur a foreign government investigation into the Biden family on allegations of corruption.
After the indictment of Parnas and Fruman, Giuliani met with a former Ukrainian diplomat, Andrii Telizhenko, who has promoted an unsubstantiated claim that the Ukrainian government colluded with the Democratic National Committee in 2016.
The FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force briefed a GOP-led Senate committee about Telizhenko in March.
Giuliani also met in Kyiv last December with Andrii Derkach, a pro-Russia Ukrainian lawmaker, to discuss investigating the Bidens.
U.S. intelligence officials have named Derkach as being engaged in a foreign disinformation plot aimed at denigrating Biden.
