Love is the magic word everyone is pursuing during our current times. It is the intense feeling of deep affection. Poet Maya Angelou once said, “The honorary duty of a human being is to love.” It is love that collects our efforts and endless giving, but it has many different meanings as well. To me, creation of art is a form of love. It is a connection between the soul and the paints on my canvas. Love means we are accepted, and someone is connected to us.
Romans identified love as a personified figure, often represented as Cupid. Shakespeare created different meanings for how humans love and what it looks like. “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind” (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). From Shakespeare’s imagery, people drew an image of how love should be portrayed, the indefinite forbidden love Romeo and Juliet shared.
Love can be the romantic phase we experience through our beloved ones. It is a complicated formula to make individuals in the community learn how to love each other. When I arrived in Syracuse four years ago, I loved the city with the hills and the beautiful landscapes. It is how I portrayed Central New York in my community art project, “We Are Immigrants.” Many Central New Yorkers contributed to the project with beautiful pieces of sketches, a reflection of different memories from people who came as immigrants hundreds of years ago up until today.
In the last few months of isolation and social distancing, many people are trying to survive either economically or emotionally. It is the community keeping us strong when we love and care for each other. My mural, “Middle Eastern Dreams,” is a large mural, a product of love and community work. It is how we continue to survive, by care and love.
