Did you miss out on a summer vacation? Even though most of us can’t travel now, we can make our home feel like a getaway, says Daniel Perry, Airbnb’s most reviewed SuperHost in Oregon and an interior designer.
The owner of vacation reservation management company bookAirHop suggests we bring aspects of our favorite vacations to our backyard. It can be as simple as hanging up a hammock.
With each of the 100 short-term rental properties Perry manages — in theater- and restaurant-centric downtown Ashland to deluxe lake cabins, wine country estates, Oregon beachfront properties and Baja, Mexico luxury villas — he creates a unique design and selects features to add comfort and personality.
In most cases, he includes an inviting outdoor living space.
At his historic orchard home in Talent, he’s added under-the-sky dining and seating, and what he calls “sports areas.” There’s also a patch of sand and tropical flowers.
“In early August, we built a large pergola overlooking our view of Paschal Winery,” says Perry. “Next up is a waterfall water feature.”
His bookings so far this year are projected to be better than last year because “everyone is looking for an escape,” he says.
To help at home, retailers are offering deep summer sales on outdoor furnishings.
Here are 10 ways to make your backyard feel like a vacation getaway:

Set up casual seating for two as seen in the 2019 NW Natural Street of Dreams' Farm to Table home.
Outdoor dining: What’s essential to creating an inviting outdoor dining and seating area, big or small?
“At our home and our rental properties, we always like one common outdoor area where everyone can sit together,” says Perry.

Rather than a large table for eight or more people, which can be expensive, he uses two tables that seat four or six people. Square tables are easy to put next to each other.
>Overstock has square outdoor tables on sale and free shipping
If you are designing on a dime, spray paint is your friend, says Perry.
He gathered three different table sets, which each seat four people, and painted them all matte black. He added new striped cushions and inexpensive turquoise umbrellas, which he says are a quick and simple way to dress up a table.
Total cost to renovate: $500.

>Lowe’s has plush patio cushions and pillows
Seating: For intimate conversations or alone time, set up casual seating for two near a garden or water feature.
“These spots are great to enjoy morning coffee or evening wine,” says Perry, who has a comfy chair and a small table just big enough to hold his laptop and a cup of coffee outside his mountain cabin.
An outdoor living space doesn’t have to match the home’s décor, but it should be related, he says.
The planters around his outdoor dining area are painted the same color red as his farmhouse.

Outdoor rugs are practical and fun, “like artwork on the ground,” he says.
>Cost Plus World Market has outdoor rugs and free shipping on orders $49 or more with the code WMFS49
He also likes artificial turf for a kitschy look on a deck. “Add Adirondack rocker chairs and you are ready for that mojito or mint julep,” he says.

Interior designer Daniel Perry designed his yard with a hammock in mind. This hammock is sold by Wayfair.
Lawn: Vast grass is not necessary to create a backyard oasis, says Perry, but he suggests having at least a square of turf big enough to play badminton, volleyball or croquet, and romp with the dog.
>Dick’s Sporting Goods offers free shipping on orders of $49 or more
Have seating nearby so people can cheer on the action around the backyard sports arena, he says.
TVs: Many of the properties Perry manages have outdoor TVs in covered areas for watching sports. Instead of expensive, new outdoor TVs, he installs used flat screens he finds on Craigslist for around $100.
>Best Buy has outdoor TVs sold with a price match guarantee and free delivery
Hammock: Perry says he designed his yard with a hammock in mind. He brought in river sand (about $150) to cover a 15-foot-square area near the fence line. The sand is bordered with small boulders and river grasses.
>Wayfair is having a sale with up to 70% off hammocks
Sand: “I love the feel of the sand on my feet under the hammock and the flow of the grass in the wind makes me feel like I’m near the water, which I’m not,” he says.
Under the sand is weed-guard fabric, which he cut through to add grasses and semi-tropical flowers such as cannas and crocosmia.

Plants delivers a visual punch and fragrance as seen at the 2019 NW Natural Street of Dreams' Farm to Table home.
Tropical flowers: What grows well in the Pacific Northwest and delivers a big visual punch and fragrance?
Perry says there are many good choices such as passion flowers for vines, canna lilies and crocosmia for a tropical look, and color-changing lantanas.
>Burpee offers free shipping
“Grapes are a great and indestructible choice, and you have something to eat,” he adds.
Water feature: The sight and sound of flowing water, no matter how much, can instantly enhance a yard.
Water fixes everything in life, says Perry, who has a sphere water feature in his rose garden. Water gently flows over the top of a ball.
“It’s quiet and doesn’t scare off the attraction of gold finches and hummingbirds,” he says. “We are also working on a tall water feature that will have a long waterfall. Fairly small, overall, occupying just six feet by six feet, but with a lot of impact”
