Casey DeSantis fought back tears as she recounted her husband Ron’s steadfast support following her breast cancer diagnosis in late 2021.
“He was there for me, and he was there to pick up my kids when I couldn’t. And he did it with humility and he did it with love,” the former TV news anchor and reporter told NBC News reporter Dasha Burns.
“I’ll tell you what – you can’t ask for a better husband than that,” she stressed, gesturing at the Florida governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate.
The DeSantises have been open in discussing Casey’s cancer battle, with her husband announcing her diagnosis in October 2021. Six months later, the visibly thrilled Ron DeSantis released another video to social media announcing his wife was cancer-free.
“In sickness and in health,” DeSantis told Burns in the interview that aired Monday. “That’s what you sign up for. I mean she’s not only my wife, she’s my best friend. And so, you know, this is just what you do.”
The couple have been married since 2009 and have three children, daughters Madison and Mamie as well as son Mason.
Casey DeSantis, 43, has begun taking a featured role on the campaign trail, enthusiastically stumping for her husband in early voting states like Iowa.
Florida’s first couple found time to cut loose as well, making a surprise appearance Saturday night at Iowa state Rep. Taylor Collins’s wedding in Des Moines.
“You never know who will crash your wedding reception during caucus season! An honor to be on #TeamDeSantis,” Collins tweeted alongside video of the couple making their entrance.
That wedding visit came shortly after former President Donald Trump crashed a wedding at his Bedminster, NJ golf club in the wake of his latest indictment.
The 44-year-old governor has set the goal of visiting all 99 counties in the Hawkeye State before the Jan. 15 caucuses and has been cultivating relationships with key politicos.
Last month, Casey debuted her “Mamas for DeSantis” initiative in Iowa, echoing her husband’s crusade for parental rights in the classroom.
The would-be first lady has underscored that her role as her husband’s top surrogate is one that she sought out.
“It is not like anybody said, ‘Oh, we need to deploy Casey to get out there and do it.’ No. This is totally because I want to do it,” she stressed in the interview.
Ron DeSantis also covered a litany of dicey political issues such as abortion, the 2020 election, and more during the wide-ranging interview with NBC.
DeSantis has begun doing more sit-down interviews with less friendly outlets, including CNN last month, where he fielded questions from Jake Tapper.
