Bob Marley: One Love first official trailer - Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as the legendary reggae singer who died at 36 in upcoming biopic
The Bob Marley: One Love first official trailer was released by Paramount Pictures on Thursday.
It comes roughly six months ahead of the highly-anticipated film's January 12, 2024 release date.
The upcoming movie stars British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, 37, as the late singer - who died in 1981 at age 36 - and Lashana Lynch stars opposite him as Marley's wife Rita.
Produced in partnership with the Marley family, the feature 'celebrates the life and music of an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity,' according to a synopsis.
It continues, 'On the big screen for the first time, discover Bob’s powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music.'
The movie will showcase Bob's trajectory, from his early days growing up in Jamaica to his ascent to global superstar and political activist.
The three-minute teaser shows the aftermath of an assassination attempt on the singer's life, which contradicted his message of love and peace.
Rita, who is now 76-years-old, wed the Could You Be Loved hitmaker in 1966 and they were together until his untimely death at age 36 in 1981.
The trailer opens with Ben-Adir on stage as the reggae music icon in front of a massive crowd gathered for one of his concerts.
The visual then transitions from the concert scenario to Marley in a recording studio with Lashana appearing as Rita, who was one of his background singers.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, Frank E. Flowers and Terence Winter, the teaser also shows scenes of Marley relaxing with his family and playing soccer.
Along with Ben-Adir and Lynch, the film’s cast also includes James Norton, Tosin Cole, Anthony Welsh, Michael Gandolfini, Umi Myers and Nadine Marshall.
The clip closes with one of the many messages of peace and hope Marley preached in his life and music: 'One love, one heart, one destiny.'
Ziggy Marley, 54, Bob's oldest son, took to Instagram on Wednesday to speak on the forthcoming biopic.
Sharing a promotional image with his 1.4 million followers, he began a lengthy caption, 'Tomorrow is the release of the first official trailer for the @bobmarley @onelovemovie.
'Nothing happens before it’s time and now is the time for the story of our father Bob Marley to be represented in a biopic theatrical release coming in 2024.
'You’ve heard the music and you think you know the man but do you really understand what he went through and what moments shaped him into the person he became,' he teased.
Then he added, 'Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring Kingsley Ben Adir as Bob with Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita, this film will bring you to witness for the first time what it was like to be around the legend, to see his pain his sorrows, his joys and his redemption.'
The note continued: 'Filmed in England and Jamaica, the cast and crew represents one of the most unique creation to ever come out of a hollywood studio.
'Authenticity fills the screen with numerous Jamaican actors doing us proud in representing the culture.'
Bob's firstborn son noted that the movie was 'filmed at the actual places where Bob walked, played football and sang like Trench Town and Bull bay in Kingston.'
He said it is 'an artistic creation that we are proud of and want you to enjoy to be entertained but also to be inspired.
'The family produced it with Paramount studio and for us it represents the continuation of Bob’s message and growth.'
Ziggy went on to share: 'With this release we look forward to inspiring not only the long time fans but also the younger generation, giving them a vehicle that opens the door to explore Bob’s life and music and in so doing expand his universal message of unification, justice and peace throughout the earth.
'We do this with purpose and are delighted to share with you the trailer for Bob Marley One Love the movie. RASTAFARI.'
While on stage at CinemaCon 2023 this past April, Ziggy promised that the biopic will help people 'deepen their connection to Bob and honor Bob in the right way.'
Production on the shoot began in December 2022 in London, England, and wrapped this spring.
Bob Marley pioneered the reggae music genre by incorporating elements of ska and rocksteady to create his own form of world music that he considered to be 'for the people.'
During his illustrious career, Marley recorded 13 studio albums, beginning with The Wailing Wailers (1965), and ending with Confrontation (1983), which was the only album to be released posthumously.
Among his many scores of classic hits are Redemption Song, One Love, Could You Be Loved, Exodus, No Woman No Cry, Is This Love, and Jamming.
