FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- A critically ill Hoosier teen gets to visit his dream store -- Sweetwater Sound -- as part of his big wish.

"I knew I was getting something that I was going to have a lot of fun with, but the amount of stuff they have here is really cool," Kyle Burkhead said.

The 17-year-visited Sweetwater Sound for a tour of the company's new retail store.

The teen lives in Connorsville, east of Indianapolis and cultivated a love of music.

"My dad was really big into music and I joined the middle school band as soon as I could and really got into music," he said.

When he got a physical for his middle school's cross country team, the doctor found a problem with his heart -- a problem so severe that Kyle was sent to Riley Hospital for Children and is now on a strict regimen of medication for the rest of his life.

This trip to Sweetwater is his wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, because he wants to pursue audio production and composing, especially soundtracks for video games or film.

Until now, he'd been using limited apps on his phone to create his music.

But Make-A-Wish and Sweetwater are gifting him thousands of dollars of equipment to help him reach his dream.

"With this I can firstly use more tracks and probably more instruments and a wider range of things and also just better sound quality and better things to do," he said.

Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children up to 18 years old with critical conditions.

Sadly, the need is great across the country and right here at home.

"Currently we have 92 kids waiting on wishes here in northeast Indiana, so the pipeline is large and it's growing every day. The pandemic obviously affected that, as in we were unable to grant travel wishes for quite a while. So we're hoping that we're going to be able to start granting travel wishes here soon and decrease that pipeline," Jenny Boyd said.

Kyle's dad actually worked at Sweetwater years ago, and is thrilled the company is helping his son.

The Burkheads say they will make all the new equipment plus a desk to put it all on fit somewhere in their home so Kyle can continue to pursue his dreams.
