With sustainability at the front of our minds, it's hard to ignore the waste involved in our daily routines. Suddenly, each single-use water bottle or excessively packaged product elicits frustration. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to make eco-friendly choices, but small everyday switches can make all the difference – and some are easier than you may think.
Here, we're placing the spotlight on make-up removal routines. By swapping disposable cotton pads for a reusable alternative, you’ll drastically reduce how much waste you’re creating — and your skin might just thank you for it too.
Why are single-use make-up wipes and cotton pads so bad?
Make-up wipes aren't just damaging your skin barrier – they're catastrophic for the planet, too. In the UK, 9.3 million wet wipes are thought to be flushed away every day. At best, these end up in landfill, where they’ll take years to fully decompose. At worst, they end up in the ocean.
Cotton pads may seem like the more sustainable substitute, but this isn't entirely the case. Cotton itself takes vast amounts of water to grow: it takes around 20,000 litres of water to produce around 15 packs of cotton pads.
How do you use a reusable make-up pad?
When it comes to reusable make-up pads, there are lots of different options to choose from. You might want a pad that closely mimics the look and feel of a disposable, or perhaps you prefer the flannel-like properties of a cloth. Mitts are also a good option, offering lots of surface area while being easy to move around the face.
Often you’ll find these pads offer two sides, one more textured than the other. Make sure you use the gentler side around the delicate eye area, in order to avoid any pulling or tugging.
Instead of throwing them away at the end of the day, reusables can be simply placed the laundry, ready for next time. For that reason you might want to consider buying multiples to get you started. Most brands estimate you’ll get around 500-1000 uses from each pad.
How we test
We tasked our 69-strong beauty panel with trialing different reusable make-up remover products over a two-week period. In order to discover which were worth making the switch for, they judged everything from the design to the material to how effective they were at removing make-up.
In the lab, we got technical, applying waterproof eyeliner, foundation and lipstick onto artificial skin. We assessed how many swipes were needed to remove the make-up, following up with wipes to see what remained. Here are our winners...

On the whole, our panel were impressed by its efficacy, although they struggled to remove tough waterproof mascara. Soft on the skin, these large cloths are big enough to cover the whole face without using the same section twice, and can reportedly be washed up to 500 times.

Made from a blend of organic cotton and naturally antibacterial bamboo, these simple cleansing pads are ideal for removing make-up after a long day. We’re well versed in using an exfoliating mitt on our body, but on our face? Having put this one to the test, we’re now fully converted. It’s made from super-fine microfibres and works with water alone. Our testers loved how handy it was to hold and manoeuvre but did find it got a bit stained after a while, so it may be best saved for those more natural make-up days.

To try and recreate the same experience at home, you’ll need these double-sided textured mitts, as used in Sarah’s treatments. The glove design is a snug fit, so testers could be super precise with their products, and it removed make-up well. There’s also a clever internal layer of sponge that retains heat and moisture to enhance the cleanse. It’s never going to be quite as good as the real deal, but we reckon these mitts are a must for in-between appointments.

BEST FOR REMOVING WATERPROOF MAKE-UP
My Little Eco Shop Reusable Ultra Soft Make-up Remover Pad

£3.00
Almost all the pads we put to the test struggled with tough waterproof make-up – but not these. The whole testing panel said even waterproof eyeliner, lipstick and foundation proved no problem. Although the pads are soft, even around the eye area, some found them a little stiff at first, so struggled to bend them around the eye socket. They’re robust, keeping their shape well after washing and coming out clean. For those smoky eye days, there’s no better option.
