Brooke Hauser, the editor in chief of The Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, announced over social media Tuesday that she was laid off from her job.

“And... I was just told my job was ‘eliminated,’ " Hauser wrote on Twitter. “I love my staff, I love this paper, and I love this community. What a shame.”

Hauser’s announcement was met with an outpour of support over Twitter, with several people commending her for her work as an editor and calling the news of her firing terrible.

The layoff comes as the Gazette, one of the oldest newspapers in the country, as well as news outlets across the U.S. continue to deal with the financial uncertainties posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Gazette moved to a new location in the summer after putting its 45,000-square-foot building up for sale in the wake of job losses and an announcement the newspaper would be outsourcing its printing to Worcester County. The paper has been printed in Northampton since 1786.

In June, Newspapers of New England, which owns the Gazette as well as multiple other area newspapers, announced it would be laying off 29 press and distribution workers.

Only a few months prior in March, 10 staff members at the Gazette and three staff members at the Greenfield Recorder, also owned by Newspapers of New England, were laid off due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

With Hauser’s firing, Joan Livingston, editor of the Recorder, will take on the role of “editor in chief for the Pioneer Valley,” according to Michael Moses, publisher of the Gazette, Recorder, Athol Daily News, Amherst Bulletin and Valley Advocate.

“This recent downsizing was due to the ongoing economic impact of the pandemic,” Moses told MassLive.

“There will be an official announcement later today after internal communications are complete,” he noted.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Hauser has written for the Miami Herald, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times as well as multiple magazines, including Marie Claire, Allure and Glamour, according to the Gazette’s website. She is also the author of two books.
