CLEVELAND — The desire to find a significant other didn't go away when the pandemic hit.

In fact, Ashley Bakewell, a professional matchmaker at It's Just Lunch in Cleveland, says it has actually increased.

What You Need To Know

  • Professional matchmakers say more people have been looking for love in 2020

  • Couples are having to navigate dating in the pandemic, many having their first date via video chat

  • Matchmakers in Cleveland say daters are ignoring all of the traditional rules and discussing things like politics and religion right away

“This is the busiest we’ve ever been. People are striving for connection more than ever. We went from living our busy day-to-day life to now being in our homes, working alone. We’re lonely."

Samantha Leta, is one of the people who was seeking human connection at the start of the pandemic.

She said for her, dating this year has moved faster than normal.

“Dating on steroids. I know the coined term has been turbo-dating, but yeah, we had our very first date on Presidents Day, and we kinda knew we were each others' person only a few months later.”

Bakewell agrees that relationships are moving faster during the pandemic and says people are discussing topics that used to be taboo sooner, like religion and politics, but Leta says it has actually helped her relationship.

"I think we might have talked about politics and religion within those first three dates. I know it was super early on, and my thought process behind it was 'might as well.' There is no point in keeping this for down the road and it being a big deal breaker or something.”

Since those first few dates, Leta and her boyfriend have moved in with each other. Her advice to others looking for love during this crazy time is simple: Just be yourself.

“Don’t keep the one-track mind about what dating actually is in your head because I feel that dating, moving forward, is going to be so different than what it used to be because who knows when this pandemic is going to be over? Who knows when we will ever get back to normal, if normal will ever be something that we say? So, definitely keeping their mind open to new opportunities, and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and open with the person.”
