Sustainability in 2020

Make recycling a part of our lives

The pandemic has brought about changes to our daily lives. More products are used and disposed of at home, causing challenges for local recycling systems. Despite these recent challenges, America’s beverage industry is leading sustainable solutions, driving consumer awareness of the need for our plastic bottles to be recycled and remade into new bottles, as intended.

Florida’s beverage companies are committed to working with everyone who shares our goals. Through our partnership with the city of Orlando and its “ReThink Your Waste” program, the city is creating an educational, interactive experience that will raise awareness of the importance of a circular economy. This will help ensure materials are recycled instead of ending up in places where they shouldn’t.

This year, America’s leading beverage companies and its Every Bottle Back partners have invested millions in key regions across the country that will strengthen recycling programs and generate over 644 million new pounds of recycled PET. The investments mean more of our 100 percent recyclable bottles and cans can be remade, decreasing our use of new plastic.

Pasco elections supervisor blasts ‘baseless’ atacks | Dec. 3

Find your moral bearings, GOP

I salute Pasco County supervisor of elections Brian Corley’s comments damning the deceitful, dangerous shrieking about non-existent fraud in the presidential elections, coming from most of the leaders of his party — the GOP. We know that every other GOP Supervisor of Elections in the nation appears to agree with Mr. Corley, and not the charlatans and cowards atop their party, silent or worse in response to President Donald Trump’s endless lies about the issue.

Trump constantly screams about fraud and being robbed of the election, even as his representatives in court say, without exception in the doomed, frivolous, sour-grapes cases they bring, that these “are not cases about fraud.” It’s long past time for a rebellion among Republicans, to throw these cowards and deceivers out and find their moral bearings again. And Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott should be deep in the bottom center of the gigantic trash pile that ensues.

Divided government is a path to disaster. Why won’t voters admit it? | Column, Dec. 3

Divided government? More like balance

Helaine Olen seems a bit bewildered that the majority of voters in a recent survey from Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies and the Harris Poll suggested that they would still prefer a balance of power in the three branches of government, a hallmark of our democratic form of government that is a representative republic. She misguidedly refers to this balance of power as “divided government.”

Admittedly, it certainly would be less messy if we all were willing to do things the way one particular political party wanted them done without needing to bother with cumbersome debate, compromise and resolution. Do it their way and we have no issues. Otherwise, we have a “divided government.” Anyone with a different viewpoint is an “obstructionist force.” Fortunately, it doesn’t work that way. I’m pleased for that.

Offense subject of much debate | Dec. 1

Hang ‘em up, Tom

Tom Brady is a great athlete and a superb quarterback who has kept himself in incredible physical shape as he has aged, playing this young man’s game for as long as he has. He became an icon with the New England Patriots. He is still a superb athlete but older and not as mobile as the young studs in the National Football League. Ego should be put aside, along with his cleats, to go out still at almost the top of his game. It’s time to hang ‘em up, Tom, and go into New England’s Hall of Fame, where you belong.

Defeat the virus first, then recover

Gov. Ron DeSantis completely misses the point. He stated this week that many states with mask ordinances and other restrictions have higher rates of COVID-19 than Florida does. Most of them had extremely high rates of COVID-19 that resulted in the restrictions. Florida with its high rate has no restrictions. Our rate will continue to soar without them.

He also fails to understand that every individual who has died from the virus left behind people who loved them and are grieving every day. The only way we will have an economic recovery is to defeat the virus first.

Face mask mandate please

While I agree with Gov. Ron DeSantis, who stated he has no intention of implementing any lockdowns or closing businesses, I do believe that Florida needs more face mask restrictions. DeSantis is wrong in saying that all people are wearing them in public settings. And some of those wearing masks are wearing them below their nose, which doesn’t help as much. And each time I go to a store, there is at least one person without a mask. There should be a sign on every store window reading: “No mask, no service.” And this restriction should be enforced.

I can’t be the only one who is sick and tired of dealing with inconsiderate, selfish people. There is a reason why Florida has the third highest number of coronavirus cases in the nation. And the reason is DeSantis’ lack of leadership.

Trump running in 2024

Too old for 2024?

Isn’t it interesting that President Donald Trump is already considering a presidential run in 2024, when he will be the same age as President-elect Joe Biden (who Trump has said repeatedly is too old to be president) is now?
