STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Senior Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) logged a third-quarter tally that would prove to be the difference in a 2-1 win for the UMass Lowell field hockey team (4-1) at Wagner (0-5) on Friday.
"We worked hard to earn this win," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "We played great possession hockey in the first half, and showed our grittiness and will to win in the second."
The River Hawks have now won three in a row, matching the program's longest win streak at the Division I level.
Berger notched both goals in the contest for UMass Lowell for a team-best four on the year. Sophomore Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands), who has now allowed just two goals in 2021, registered three saves in the contest, as well.
The teams played evenly matched with 12 shots apiece on the day, although the River Hawks' firepower was more accurate, putting 10 of those 12 attempts on target.
UMass Lowell got on the board in just the eighth minute of action, earning a breakaway before Berger beat the Seahawks' Daisy Ruhle one-on-one with a sliding shot from seven yards out.
The visitors maintained the 1-0 edge through halftime until Agustina DeHarbe converted on a corner in the 36th minute. The stalemate was short-lived, though, as Berger sent a reverse-chip on target two minutes later to put the River Hawks back in front, 2-1.
Wagner tested the defense in the fourth and final quarter, outshooting UMass Lowell, 7-3, but Boekhorst and the back line locked it down to earn the decision.
The River Hawks are now back in action on Friday, September 24 when they host UC Davis to open a four-game homestand.
