MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A group of young adults in Monroe started a new nonprofit to make a positive difference in their communities. On Sunday, B.R.I.D.G.E. hosted its first cleanup and voter registration today in the Mt. Nebo community.
“We’re just trying to get more youthful representation of us in the city,” said Urald King, B.R.I.D.G.E. president.
The name stands for Building Relationships In Different Generations and Ethnicities.
King says they’re filling the void and becoming that bridge between young and old. “We’re literally trying to be that representation. That’s why we we’re trying to build relationships inside different generations and ethnicities, because we know there’s a big void.”
The group’s first task: leading about 30 volunteers on a cleanup through the Mt. Nebo community, picking up trash and other litter left behind after Fourth of July celebrations.
“It was a holiday yesterday, and we know there’s a lot of people that’s going to be out. We actually have people seeing us today,” King said. “We can have more people want to join us and see representation of themselves in the community.”
“We’re letting people know that it’s okay to get involved and make a difference and not necessarily wait for someone else to make that difference for them,” said Elijah Brass, B.R.I.D.G.E. vice president.
Brass says this is one of the ways they plan to use their voice to unite everyone. “One solid foundation, one solid voice, and we plan to just be the pioneers in this area. Hopefully, other people will find out what we’re doing and they can do it and make it work in their community as well,” Brass said.
That’s a voice they’re also helping others use by helping them register to vote too. Though they won’t be able to vote in the spring 2020 election, King says there’s always important issues to make your voice heard on.
“Not only for the national election, but for your local election,” King says. “We need people to realize that it’s things going on in their hometown that they need to get more involved in.”
King says they’re already working on their next plans as they continue to bridge the gap, “We have a lot of things coming, but today we just want to get our staple and let people know who we are in the community and get more people involved. We’re going to lead from there.”
