LOS ANGELES – USC baseball alumni Brooks Kriske became the 115th Trojan to reach the big leagues when he made his MLB debut tonight (July 29) for the New York Yankees.Kriske, who was drafted by the Yankees in 2016, tossed a scoreless ninth inning in a win for New York, striking out two batters and walking one. His debut came after he was called up to the active roster on Sunday and was at the behest of Yankees manager and fellow USC alum Aaron Boone.
Kriske played four years at USC (2013-16) before being selected in the sixth round of the 2016 draft. Over the course of his career, he made 71 appearances, including seven starts, posting a 3.45 ERA in 120.2 innings. Kriske lowered his ERA each year during his collegiate tenure, finishing with a 2.55 ERA and .205 opponent batting average after taking over as the USC closer his senior season.
The big righty progressed steadily through the Yankees' system over his three MiLB seasons, reaching Double-A last year. He was also named to the Yankees' 40-man roster last season and started this year in the initial 60-man player pool. Kriske has a 1.97 ERA in 72 minor league relief appearances and 11.6 K's/9.
USC has produced 115 major leaguers over the years — more than any other NCAA program in the nation. Trojan alums boast 67 All-Star appearances, 29 World Series appearances, nine Cy Young awards, three Hall of Famers, three Rookie of the Year Awards, one American League MVP and one World Series MVP.
