Class of 2023 athlete Jeremiyah Love is among the double-digit visitors in Ann Arbor this weekend.
Jay Harbaugh and Michigan have recruited the four-star playmaker hard, but the St. Louis (Mo.) Christian Brothers product has plenty of other suitors on his list — especially since Love returned from an injury and helped lead his team to a state championship.
“Once he got full time about week five, you could see his recruitment taking off, you could see the big plays taking off,” his coach, Scott Pingel, told The Michigan Insider recently.
“But what a lot of people don’t realize is he loves blocking. He’s a heck of a wideout. A lot of coaches are recruiting him as an athlete because they think he can play multiple positions — even the defensive side of the ball. The college position of choice can be Jeremiyah’s. I think he’ll have that option of picking out what side of the ball he wants to play on. Once it took off, it snowballed faster than anybody I’ve ever seen. I think he’s still not to his potential yet — that’s scary.”
While Love played almost exclusively at running back last year, Pingel says he plans to use the playmaker in a hybrid role this fall. Love will still earn carries out of the backfield, but he’ll also split out wide or line up in the slot.
“We want to get him out in space a bit more,” Pingel said.
Why the focus on getting him the ball in space? Love has “high-end, national, elite speed,” Pingel explained, and that makes him a “game-changer.”
“What’s unique about him is, whenever he jump cuts, he doesn’t lose any speed,” Pingel said. “He jump cuts and then it’s that high-end speed, instantaneous. That’s what separates him from a lot of other backs we’ve coached is his ability to change directions and not slow down much.”
And that, of course, is why Michigan and so many others are high on Love.
Jeremiyah Love on his official visit to Michigan
Love is taking his official visit to Michigan (June 10-12), a second trip to Ann Arbor this year following one in the spring.
“The Michigan atmosphere is just a great, great atmosphere,” Love told TMI. “You want to come in there and just work because you're not going to have anything handed down to you. You've got to work.”
Notre Dame, Alabama, Oregon, USC, Texas A&M and Missouri are among the other programs hoping to add Love to their class of 2023.
One deciding factor, Pingel explained, is how teams plan on using Love. (“He likes the idea of being a wideout running back combo,” the coach explained, and he wants to play on offense.) Other influences will include his close-knit family and academics.
“He’s such an academic kid,” Pingel said. “He’s a very quiet kid. If you walk around the hall later and talk to any of the teachers, they all want him to keep pursuing his academics because he’s really good at Spanish; he’s really good at technology; he’s really good at math. He’s a very versed kid that has a lot of hidden talents people don’t know about. He can get on the piano and start tickling the ivory. He’s a unique cat with a lot of God-given gifts.”
