Nearing 40 and wanting to have a biological child, Katharine Dion decided to separate dating from mating. As she writes in her Modern Love essay, “I resolved to have a child outside of the context of love.”

Things did not go according to plan for Ms. Dion — suggesting that life may be a little bit more like a poem than a math problem.
