Summerdale FCCLA students have enjoyed sending and receiving "Letters of Love" with the residents at the Robertsdale Health and Rehab facility.
While creating and planning a community service project to participate in this year, the students insisted that we lift the spirits of the residents at the nursing home who are not allowed or able to do much communicating with others due to COVID.
The students are using language skills while learning how to properly write a personal letter using creativity.
This "pen-pal" project began when students sent letters to the Robertsdale Nursing Home on Valentine’s Day. The students received response letters on March 1 and replied to the residents on March 5. The middle school students are currently waiting for their next response letter and already thinking of new ways to make their next letters better and more interactive.
Through the "Letters of Love" students hope to give the residents something to do along with reading their letter. Students created puzzles and personalized word search, or crossword games based off what their pen pals say they like.
Shelley Cantrell said she is thrilled to watch the students read and create a response that will spark joy in the lives of others.
“It just keeps getting better and better from letter to letter,” she said.
