MANCHESTER, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team ran their winning streak to four-straight on Wednesday after dealing in-state rival Quinnipiac a 5-2 loss at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy. The Huskies are now 4-1 this spring.
"The team had a great win today over a very solid Quinnipiac team," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "With the win, we continued our undefeated streak at home to 4-0. The players came out strong in doubles and set the tone of the match right away. All three teams played solid throughout, and pulled ahead on each court to secure the doubles point."
In doubles, the sophomore-freshman tandem of Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) set the tone by opening with a 6-2 win over Dominique Vasile and Stephanie Yanosov at No. 3. The Huskies made it a clean sweep in doubles to grab the opening point as junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) posted a 6-2 win at No. 1 and sophomores Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) also won 6-2 at No. 2.
"In singles we were challenged right from the start on all six courts, but found our way to winning 4 of the 6 first sets," commented Marshall. "The match toughness is getting better every day, and we fought through some adversity to win 4 of the 6 singles matches. I am very pleased with the effort and fight the team showed today."
In singles, UConn pushed the match to 3-0 with wins by Takunyaci at No. 5 over Payton Bradley, 6-2 and 6-0 and Karamyshev at No. 6 over Stephanie Yanosov, 6-3 adn 6-3. The Huskies clinched the win at the top-sport with Bou beating Kamilla Nella, 6-4 and 6-3. Lai was the other Husky winner, beating Vasile in three sets at No. 3, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
The Huskies wrap up a five-match homestand this Saturday playing host to the Boston University Terriers at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy at 3 pm.
