SAN BRUNO – Nearly three dozen people were arrested on suspicion of using or possessing illegal fireworks in San Bruno on the Fourth of July, authorities said Monday.
Officers also seized 58 pounds of illegal fireworks, said San Bruno police Capt. Jeremy Brandenburg in a news release.
Brandenburg said 50 officers responded to 181 fireworks-related calls and made 35 arrests. The arrestees were issued an administrative citation, the penalty for which is a $1,000 fine, and released.
In the days leading up to the Fourth of July, officers visited areas where problems have arisen in the past, Brandenburg said. They spoke with residents about the use of illegal fireworks, penalties for their possession and use, and the dangers they pose.
“Illegal fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, aerials, mortars, M-1000’s, roman candles and others present an obvious public safety hazard as they can cause personal injury and significant damage to property,” Brandenburg said in the news release.
“Additionally, the extreme noise associated with most illegal fireworks can be very disruptive to other Fourth of July revelers,” he continued, “and can cause serious distress to family pets.”
