Veteran stars Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah have been great actors and thorough professionals all their lives. They have given Indian cinema some of its finest gems (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Mandi, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Masoom). But while acing in the professional space, both of them have stood beside each other in their marriage of over 40 years.
Naseeruddin and Ratna met each other during the rehearsal of Satyadev Dubey’s play ‘Sambhog se Sanyas Tak’ in 1975. “All great romances of theaters begin at a rehearsal,” Naseeruddin had said while narrating his love story with Ratna to NDTV in an older interview. Their first meeting happened at a juice stall outside the National College in Mumbai, and for Naseer “sparks flew right away”. But Ratna didn’t pay attention to him. For her, he was just another talented actor who had joined the play.
But, she fell for Naseer as they spent more time together while rehearsing for ‘Sambhog se Sanyas Tak’. “The play was very significantly titled Sambhog Se Sanyas Tak. That is the story of our life. Bas sanyaas lena baaki hai,” Ratna told indianexpress.com. As per Naseer, theirs was not a “whirlwind” romance but it was “pretty intense.” He told NDTV, “We kept sizing up each other for six years before we decided to tie the knot.”
But Ratna and Naseer had to wait for a while before they could solemnise their relationship as Naseer was already married to Parveen Murad and had a daughter, Heeba. Though Naseer and Parveen had been living separately, it took them some time to get legally divorced. Meanwhile, Ratna and Naseer started living together. Recalling one of the incidents from their courtship period, Ratna had shared during an AIB podcast how both of them had to count money in their wallets after ordering food at a restaurant during one of their earlier dates.
“These fancy restaurants once upon a time used to have two menu cards. One for the women and one for the men. The one for the woman didn’t have the prices and the one for men did. The first time we went together we had like Rs 400. We went for this dinner and we just started out in life and we hardly had any money. By mistake, I got the menu card with the money and Naseer got the menu card without the money, so he was ordering left and right. I was trying to warn him about the bill through my facial expressions. And finally, when the waiter went away I told him and then we started counting our money,” Ratna recalled.
Finally, the lovebirds married each other on April 1, 1982. They had a simple wedding at Ratna’s mother Dina Pathak’s home. Speaking about their wedding, Ratna had shared that it was one of those rare wedding ceremonies where the bride and groom enjoyed themselves as much as the guests.
“We had a fantastic wedding. We had a ball at our wedding. We went to the beach, swam and drank wine, and had a great time. There were no rituals and no rona dhona (crying). I remember when I left my mom’s place, we all were singing bidaai songs together. Naseer and I were also singing a whole lot of bidaai songs,” the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai actor had remembered during an interview with ETimes.
All through their marriage, Naseer and Ratna have ‘fought’ with each other but have also had ‘great fun’. Like any married couple, they get annoyed with each other’s small habits. Naseeruddin told ETimes he gets annoyed when Ratna takes, “ten minutes to get out of the car” and she gets annoyed when “he leaves his dirty clothes on her towel”. She also thinks he gets “impatient” quite easily.

But ultimately, it has been a relationship of “equals”. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Ratna Pathak Shah had said, “It’s a relationship, which has been very useful. It is a relationship of equals, of friends, which has been a blessing for us. We became very good friends and stayed very good friends.” And, she credits Naseer for making her work harder as he is an “extraordinarily hard-working actor”. She added, “He inspires and pushes me to do better. I am very lazy. Itni hardworking nahi hu. Toh Naseer ki dekha dekhi mein, mujhe bhi mehnat karni hi padti hai.”
This is the kind of couple whose idea of romance and fun is rehearsing and preparing for their theatre play rather than going out to parties or romantic dinners, and they have to stuck to their idea of romance.
