The query came as Khalid Abdulqaadir was taking a polygraph test to obtain security clearance for a U.S. government intelligence agency.

“Have you ever kept a secret from your wife?” the examiner asked Mr. Abdulqaadir, the writer of this week’s Modern Love essay.

The answer, he told the examiner, was yes. Later, after Mr. Abdulqaadir shared the results of the test with his wife, she revealed some secrets of her own. “As a result,” he writes, “we grew closer and closer, more accepting of the other’s past failings, not less.”
