“I’m going to be honest, I’m not really a love poet
In fact, every time I try to write about love my hands cramp… just to show me how painful love can be
And sometimes my pencils break, just to prove to me that every now and then love takes a little more work than you planned”
That is an excerpt from “Love Poem Medley” by Rudy Francisco.
I had to borrow the words, because, despite me making a living as a writer, when I try to describe my feelings for you, I’m speechless.
My thoughts get jumbled, my mind goes blank, I lose my ability to articulate myself, and I’m happy as I can be.
It took me a long time to find you, I looked high and low, and just when I thought you didn’t exist, we stumbled across each other.
From that moment on, I knew my search was over.
I’d found my true love.
My forever love.
I often struggle to tell you, so instead I do my best to show you.
I pick up your dishes, or vacuum the floor. When I try to cook dinner or stop to make the perfect slushie, those are my ways of saying I love you.
It’s not just when I say the words, I work hard to show you they actually mean something.
As I’ve told you many times, “words matter,” but they only matter when backed up by actions.
By the time you, and my readers see this, we’ll be married.
Until I met you, I’d given up on that ever happening, but I’m so glad that I waited and found you to be my wife.
Getting to know you, first as a friend, and then as so much more have been the best years of my life. I’m hoping that despite finding each other later in life we still get to spend the next 60 years together.
Before you, I wasn’t sure I ever could love again, and now, I’m not sure I ever truly loved before. I didn’t know what love was before you.
We compliment each other in everything we do, we mesh on all the important things in life, and you tolerate everything else I do. Even when I decide at 2 a.m. that I want to write a new book, or start another side venture, you never tell me it’s stupid (even when it is). Instead, you find a way to support me with it.
Through thick and thin, you’re the one I want by my side.
“See I’m going to be honest, I’m not a love poet
But if I was to wake up tomorrow morning and decide
that I really wanted to write about love, I swear that my first poem…
It would be about you.”
That’s how Rudy ended his poem, and it fully articulates how I feel about you.
Christina, I love you, and I’m so happy you said yes!
