EAST LANSING, Mich. – Vito Tonejc and his doubles partner Marino Jakic are making a nice run at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan State.
The Blue Demon tandem won three consecutive matches on Friday in advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
That means they are one of eight doubles teams still vying for a regional title and a berth in the ITA National Fall Championships Nov. 4-7 in San Diego.
Tonejc and Jakic started their day with an 8-6 victory over Clement Mainguy and Nathan Favier of Youngstown State.
That final score would become a recurring theme.
In the round of 32, they took down Big Ten power Illinois represented by Alex Petrov and Gabrielius Guzauskas by a score of---8-6.
They made it three in a row by the exact same score, advancing past Northwestern's Simen Bratholm and Brian Berdusco who came into Friday as the No. 56 ranked doubles team in the country.
That was Tonejc and Jakic's second win over a nationally ranked opponent. In early October at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., the dynamic duo upset Kentucky's No. 37 ranked doubles team Gabriel Diallo and Francois Musitelli.
Teammates Luuk Wassenaar and Lars Peder Minsaas almost followed their lead.
Wassenaar and Minsaas downed Max Sandoval and Jakub Zamorski of Chicago State 8-3 and followed up with a big 8-6 win over Notre Dame's Peter Conklin and Axel Nefve.
But they came up just short of placing two DePaul duos in the quarterfinals after dropping an 8-4 decision to Michigan's Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth.
In DePaul's lone singles match of the day, Leon Huck fell short in his bid to qualify for the Main Draw after a 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1 setback to Michigan State's Luke Baylis.
Saturday's ITA Midwest Regional schedule features the first two rounds of the Main Draw singles field of 64 along with consolation matches plus the doubles quarterfinals.
