Faith Matters: Show godly love to immigrants - The Reporter

As I pen these words, my heart is heavy regarding the treatment of immigrants and refugees in this country. We claim to be one nation under God, but that is far from the truth.

As communities seek refuge in this country, in far too many cases, they are treated as less than human. I have watched in horror as Haitians have sought asylum in our country and have been treated as cattle. In Texas, there are immigrants, many from Haiti, who have experienced anything but love and support. Perhaps this should come as no surprise: people of color in our own nation are still treated as if they are less than others. As people of God, we are called to love our brothers and sisters, across racial, economic, and political lines. This is a universal principle that every community should strive to uphold.

It seems to be our tendency to often dislike or discard people that do not speak or look like us. Let us hear the voice of the prophet Micah who said, “What does the Lord require of us; to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.” We must show godly love for all people, regardless of where they may have come from. We cannot ask others to treat us kindly if we do not treat others kindly. When they come into this country seeking employment or to open businesses, we should be the first in line to help and support them. We need to speak out when we see injustice toward them. We cannot remain silent and standby, seeing our brothers and sisters treated as if they have no value.

Our voices must be raised against any political system in our country that seeks to destroy the very fabric of life for people of color. People of faith cannot remain silent. We have a mandate from the Lord, and we must respond.Treating people in ways that devalue their lives, is something that must concern all of us. We are not free until all are free. President Joe Biden says there will be consequences for the treatment of Haitian refugees. He goes on to further to say it is embarrassing and sends the wrong message around the world. Not only is it embarrassing, but it is sinful. Let’s call it what it is: racism raising its ugly head.

In many ways, it unfortunately symbolizes the temperature of this country when it comes to racism. This is hate-at-work and I firmly state: love is stronger than hate. We need godly love. No amount of legislation or punishment can stop those from committing these ungodly acts. The people of God who love God, must stand firm in their love for others. Reach out with courageous hearts and hands, changing the course of this country. Yes, we are our brother and sisters’ keepers. God has made us all — let us stand together as one.
