My friend has this thing she does most Fridays and I find it to be inspiring and grounding at the same time. She started it years ago and it is pretty enjoyable to read. Most Fridays she shares what she loves in her life and shares it with her friends inviting them to share the things big and small alike that bring them happiness.
So, I thought I would try it out as well.
• I just love this time of the year when the roadside farm stands are full of seasonal goodies like apples, pumpkins and the final tomatoes of the season. Sometimes I get to be a bit like a chipmunk about gathering them all up.
• I love when I move to a new town and make great connections with a new farmer and get great food from the exchange as well as a relationship supporting local agricultural endeavors.
• Having alfresco meals with friends is another Friday love.
• Maybe a less common one here, but I love diving into things like newly published deer harvest stats or crash data, comparing and analyzing it compared to other counties or how things have changed over time. Looking through what may seem like boring reports at first and finding hidden revelations in them or unexpected pieces of info is pretty fun.
• I love it when my friends can be raw, real and share their flaws and things that they are working through in their lives like general life challenges, mental illness or family struggles.
• These days, I love rainy days whether I want to go for a hike or stay indoors. The rainy days seem so cozy either way. It also helps when avoiding the fairweather crowds.
• I love, love, love lake effect snow. I just find it to be one of the most beautiful and exhilarating things. As soon as the snowflakes start to fly, I get antsier than a kid on the last week before summer break.
• I love the look of this tree on Coates Highway near the corner of Chief Road. It simply looks like it belongs on a hard cider logo or something.
• I love letting my gardens or flowerbeds do whatever they want and rarely need to do any weeding once it’s established.
• I love breathing in the forest smells any time of the year, but especially on those sunny days when the leaf litter smells a bit stronger.
• I love it when I can find more dynamic, nuanced representation of women and minority groups that bucks stereotypes. This can be through great books or film. Recently I’ve been digging the TV show “9-1-1” and the way they show friendships and other relationships is tipping toward better representation.
• Also, it may be lunchtime while writing this because, I just love a good bagel lox and shmear sandwiches from L’Chayim Delicatessen in Benzie County.
• A calm sunny morning in bed reading or studying the thousands of Japanese kanji is also something I simply love.
• I love having hour-long conversations with friends and family on the phone talking about everything from what books and films we are into at the moment to the cool projects like aquaponics and tattoos we’re planning on getting.
• Watching plants grow and thrive by my hand over time year over year, whether in the ground or in a container is another love.
• I love how much you can learn from others and better understand the world by simply listening to people.
• Hopping in and going on a drive somewhere for a hike is definitely something that brings me joy. I also really enjoy simple adventuring where I am not weighed down with large vehicles and boats, bicycles, canoes and kayaks up top and contraptions for everything. I love to keep it simple and practical.
• Listening to all my records on Sunday drowning out the sound of church bells is another thing I love.
• I love finding unexpected sights around each bend on a trail even when you have been there before, but seeing new things each time is part of the fun.
• Watching and rewatching good TV series, noticing something different each time about the characters' growth and applicable struggles.
• I love how supportive in general, the rock climbing and outdoor adventure communities tend to be. I remember back to meeting rock climbers, white water raft folks and ski instructor types in college and they were the most uplifting and accepting folks to be around.
• I love it when I have a whole day to do what I like whether it's lounging with books, films and great food at home or running around from trail to trail, to nature preserves and seeing the great landscapes that surround the region.
• I also know I am not alone in this one: my love of crisp artesian water from Onekama. I just dig going there and having a nice drink before or after a rigorous hike.
It’s Friday, what do you love?
