Love triangles, when done well, can be a great way of heightening drama in a story, and delving into the inner conflict of the character at their center. Said character is often torn between two things that their love interests represent: purity vs. corruption, who they are and who they want to be, the past vs. the future.
Love triangles on television inspire strong feelings from fans who follow the series due to how emotionally invested they can become in the characters and their journeys. Sometimes, the way things end up can upset many when they feel as if the way the story has ended wasn't true to the character they love.
10 Angel/Buffy/Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
Angel was Buffy's first love. They're not the most obvious match, as he's a vampire and she's a vampire slayer, but he's one of the rare vampires that has a soul. Their love story ended up being pretty tragic; right after they had sex for the first time, he lost his soul and basically became an evil demon that Buffy had to kill.
He came back from the dead, and they got back together, but Angel left so that Buffy could live a less complicated life. He came back when she needed protection, but they never got back together again. On the other hand, Spike and Buffy have an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Fans who like the trope of a bad guy redeeming himself for one girl were into this pairing. Spike dies at the end of the series, so Buffy doesn't end up with either guy, disappointing shippers on both sides.
9 Annie/Jeff/Britta (Community)
Jeff and Britta had a classic sitcom will-they-won't-they in season one of Community. They eventually hooked up, and then she told him she loved him. This freaked him out, so he immediately kissed Annie.
Jeff and Britta's feelings didn't go very deep, but they continued to casually hook up. Annie had a lingering crush on Jeff, but they never pursued a relationship because of their age gap. Jeff didn't end up with either girl, but he did share a moment with Annie in the finale that sort of threw a bone to Jeff and Annie shippers.
8 Joey/Rachel/Ross (Friends)
Ross and Rachel were *that* couple for the first couple of seasons of Friends. Then, Ross' jealous side really came out, leading to Rachel's request that they take a break, which famously resulted in Ross sleeping with someone else.
The fallout of this choice led to seasons of will-they-won't-they, while Ross grew more and more annoying. Rachel then started dating Joey, which many fans were pretty weirded out by. She eventually ended up with Ross, which was perhaps the worst option available—Joey would have been better, and staying on the plane would have been best.
7 Dan/Blair/Chuck (Gossip Girl)
Everyone knew Chuck and Blair were endgame, so it was a little weird when Blair started going out with Dan instead of Chuck after divorcing Louis. What was even weirder was how Dan and Blair ended up being a more functional couple than Chuck and Blair.
These pairings have divided Gossip Girl fans, and the debate over who Blair should have chosen rages on to this day. Whether you think she made the wrong choice to marry Chuck or you think she never should have dated Dan in the first place, this love triangle didn't really sit right with anyone.
6 Callie/George/Izzie (Grey's Anatomy)
George never should have been with either one of these women, so nobody really likes this love triangle. He didn't have chemistry with either Callie or Izzie. He married Callie quickly after his father's death left him in a spiral, and he eventually cheated on fan-favorite Callie with Izzie, which didn't bode well for anyone involved.
To make matters worse, George's relationship with Izzie didn't go anywhere either, so he hurt Callie for nothing. There were no winners in this scenario.
5 Barney/Robin/Ted (How I Met Your Mother)
Robin and Ted were the first to like each other, and their friendship was sort of a will they/won't they, romantically. They dated for a while but eventually broke up after Ted found out that Barney had feelings for Robin. Barney took a long time to confess those feelings. Robin returned those feelings, and the two dated for a while before breaking up because they felt that they were too similar to make it work long-term.
They later got back together and got married, which many fans were happy about. It was shown in the flash-forward that Ted's wife died and that Robin divorced Barney and got back together with Ted, something that fans were mostly very displeased with.
4 Hanna/Caleb/Spencer (Pretty Little Liars)
Hannah and Caleb were a fan-favorite couple for many seasons on Pretty Little Liars. Everyone knew that they would end up together, but it was revealed that they were broken up after the time jump. Not only that, but Hannah was engaged to someone else.
What really shocked fans was that Spencer, one of Hannah's best friends, was broken up with her long-term boyfriend Toby, and was in a relationship with Caleb. It was serious enough that the two moved in together. Though Spencer and Caleb were perhaps better matched than Hannah and Caleb were, by this point, fans were invested in the original pairing so much that this new one felt off.
3 Mutt/Alexis/Ted (Schitt's Creek)
There were sparks between Alexis and Mutt from the time she first moved to Schitt's Creek, but Alexis began to date Ted, who she never seemed all that interested in. She eventually broke up with him to be with Mutt, and the two dated briefly before realizing that they had virtually nothing in common.
They broke up, and Alexis began to see Ted in a new light. They fell for each other again and got back together and became a fan-favorite couple the second time around. Unfortunately, Alexis didn't get her happy ending with Ted, as they broke up due to strain caused by long distance.
2 Dan/Serena/Nate (Gossip Girl)
Serena made many controversial romantic decisions on Gossip Girl. When the show started, it was revealed that she had hooked up with Nate while he was dating her best friend Blair, which made people pretty much automatically root against Nate ending up with either girl. Then, Serena met Dan, who seemed like a nice guy, but their on-and-off relationship grew tiresome for many.
In season four, Serena found herself torn between Dan and Nate, who she dated once they were both single. By this point, Nate was the nicer guy of the two, and many fans still think he is the one she should've been with rather than marrying Dan in the finale.
1 Maya/Emily/Paige (Pretty Little Liars)
Maya was Emily's first girlfriend and remains a fan favorite to this day. Paige was another character who had feelings for Emily, but she was also very aggressive, even once trying to literally drown Emily in a pool.
Emily was committed to Maya until her untimely and tragic death. After some time, Emily moved on and dated Paige for a while. Then, Emily didn't end up with either girl, choosing instead to marry her longtime friend Alison.
