FULLERTON, Calif. – Opening day in the MLB showed some normalcy compared to 2020, nothing more normal than Cal State Fullerton being well represented throughout the league.
The Titans have the third most players on MLB rosters with nine, trailing only Vanderbilt (13) and LSU (10).
After leading the Dodgers to its first World Series Championship since 1988, Justin Turner returns to Los Angeles' talented squad looking to repeat in 2021. Turner played in 42 games and finished with a .307 batting average, four home runs, 23 RBI, and 26 runs scored. The Long Beach, Calif. native signed a two-year deal in the offseason to remain with his hometown club.
Turner's teammate on the World Series Champions, Dylan Floro, took his talents to South Beach this offseason, signing with the Miami Marlins. Floro was a huge part of the Dodgers bullpen in 2020, going 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA in 25 appearances.
Floro joins another Titan on the Miami Marlins, Chad Wallach. Wallach appeared in 15 games last season where he finished with a .227 average, a home run and six RBI in 44 at bats.
Michael Lorenzen of the Cincinnati Reds starts the year on the injured list but is set to return to the bullpen after a 10-day stint. Lorenzen made 18 appearances for the Reds that included two starts, and finished with a 3-1 record and 4.28 ERA.
After five successful years in Oakland, Khris Davis was traded to the Texas Rangers prior to the 2021 season. In 85 at bats last year, Davis finished the regular season with 10 RBI and two home runs.
The Oakland A's get back one of the best players in baseball for 2021 as Matt Chapman returns after having season-ending hip surgery last year. The two-time Gold Glove winner was hitting .232 with 25 RBI in 37 games before missing the rest of the season. Former Golden Spike winner, Mark Kotsay is also part of the A's organization where he serves as the third base coach.
Chris Devenski also finds himself with a new club in 2021 as he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Devenski was limited last year, making just four appearances and pitching 3.2 innings.
J.D. Davis is back for another year with the Mets anchoring the hot corner. Davis played in 52 games during the shortened 2020 season, hitting .247 with 19 RBI and six home runs.
Following two years with the Washington Nationals, winning a World Series in 2019, Kurt Suzuki returns to Southern California to play for the Los Angeles Angels. Suzuki played in 33 games last year and hit .270 with 17 RBI.
The Yankees have three former Titans who are members of the coaching staff. Former Golden Spike winner and first round pick Phil Nevin serves as the team's third base coach, P.J Pilittere serves as an assistant hitting coach, and Mike Harkey is the bullpen coach.
