In a video posted by the Diocese of Greensburg this week, Bishop Larry Kulick demonstrates a recipe for a traditional Easter cheese.
As part of a collaboration with The Catholic Accent, a monthly diocesan newspaper, Kulick teaches parishioners how to make the cheese. It’s often created by people of European descent, who have termed the cheese cirak or hrudka.
“It’s one of the Easter foods that I create and place in the Easter basket for blessing on Holy Saturday,” Kulick said. “Basically, Easter cheese is very simple. It doesn’t take long to make at all, and it’s used by people throughout central and eastern Europe.”
With a contemporary twist, Kulick utilized six eggs, two cups of whole milk, one cup of cream, sugar, salt, vanilla extract and raisins. After mixing the ingredients , Kulick put the cheese in the microwave for roughly nine minutes before taking it out and wrapping it in cheese cloth.
To finish, Kulick took whole cloves and placed them in the shape of a cross on top of the cheese.
“Whatever customs or traditions you may follow in your family and whatever way, please enjoy celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,” Kulick said.
