As the sky was alight this past fall with flocks of geese on their journey south, I was envious of their freedom and ability to rise above the fear on the ground and travel with extended family: a flock on a journey apart from pandemic, partisanship, and social unrest. Of course, bird migration is not without fear or trauma, especially with the increased danger from climate change and human interference. There are many pandemics faced by God’s creatures.

Since the fall, much has happened in both our flocks. We have lost friends and family and suffered other significant losses. Some have feasted, while others have hungered. We have experienced things we cannot comprehend. And now we find ourselves in a new season. Geese are once again returning to our skies, harbingers of hope for what might soon be possible.

Like the geese, our human journeys are not separate: a truth we have surely learned this past year as infection dances between us like a phantom. There is much we might learn from their wisdom of living in community and as individuals on a shared journey.

Jesus teaches that we are not separate from the struggles of others. Whatever the question, love is the eternal and only answer. Loving our neighbors as ourselves, as well as sacrificing for the good of the community, is the only way to know peace, love, and the fullness of our own existence.

In this season of change, we will each feel differently about next steps. Some will want to gather quickly; others will need time and understanding. There is no right way to move from pandemic or crisis into the future. If we let it, fear will keep us grounded, mired in self-seeking, and lost in isolation. It is as it has always been: love will give us wings and set us free.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. DeDe Duncan-Probe is the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York.
