With Love: Messages to those lost to COVID

withlove-logo-sm

The tragedy of COVID is huge but also personal. There were many people lost that we’ll never get back to whom we never even got to say goodbye. The “With Love” project from the Resolve Philly reporting collaborative offers a chance for closure — and a chance to tell the stories of those who’ve died. This letter originally appeared on WithLovePhilly.com.

Dear Grandmom,

Thank you for all of the wonderful memories we shared together and for being an amazing grandmother to me, as well as you and Pop-Pop being amazing parents to my Mom.

I thank you so much for our times of laughter and fun, especially the times that I would visit and pull that prank that never failed to make you laugh. I would sneak up behind you and pretend to be someone else. I would say in a very deep voice, “Hello Mrs. Robinson.”

You would turn around and say, “Who is that? Who is that?

Then I would respond, “It’s your grandson, Dante.” You would tell me to stop being silly since you didn’t have a grandson named Dante. Then I would pop out from behind you and we would just start laughing and hug for the longest time.

One of our last memories together was when we were celebrating your birthday. I sang for you and I remember the way you would cry when hearing me sing, and how proud you were that I’d earned my degree and was an opera and jazz vocalist. You were always so nurturing, so in awe of your grandchildren’s talents. I thank you so much for that love and support.

I am so blessed to have known you and had you in my life. Although you are not here physically, I feel your presence. I feel your love and grace surrounding me each day, and also in my dreams of you. Although it pains me to not have you here, I will respect God’s decision to take you home. I know that you love the Lord, that you are with Him, and are in His hands. I know that you are happy in your heavenly home and I know that I will be with you again someday.

I wish that you could know that I now teach music. I wish that I could tell you about all of my future goals. I wish that you could have been here for these things, yet I know that you do see them, you are here, and are very proud. I also know that you are witnessing how our family has strived each day to honor you and keep your memory alive.

You have created such an amazing legacy and you will forever be loved and honored. We will hold onto and forever cherish, not only the memories of you, but your recipes and the laughter you incited with all of your funny stories.

Although you are gone from this Earth, you cannot and will not be forgotten. You have left behind an abundance of wealth in the form of love and I am blessed to be your heir.

With love from your granddaughter,

Diamond
