Giants will make 'large splash' next offseason, Mike Krukow believes - NBC Sports Chicago

The Giants have quietly put together a solid offseason and look to be a much better team than last season heading in 2021.

However, Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow believes the real offseason splashdown will come next winter, as MLB is poised for one of the largest free agency classes in recent memory.

Krukow joined The Athletic's Tim Kawakami on a recent episode of The TK Show, and said he believes the Giants will make at least one major move in free agency.

"I think you’re going to see more than one," Krukow said. "I think they are going to bring in some star power. I think it’ll be a person who has presence on the field, in the clubhouse, in the city. When you play in San Francisco, you have to have an understanding of the city, you have to have an understanding of the fanbase, what the expectations are."

Farhan Zaidi and the Giants have long preached 2022 as their estimated target year of contention. That partly has to do with the expected free agent market, but it's also the approximated window for the arrival of many of San Francisco's top prospects.

The Giants ever-evolving minor league pipeline boasts some serious homegrown talent, and Krukow believes San Francisco will look to follow the models of fellow division rivals as they push for big signings.

"I think they will make a rather large splash in free agency, but in doing so, you have to be able to compliment that free agency with stars from your own system," Krukow said. "This is one thing that the Padres have done such a great job with, what the Dodgers have done such a great job with. They’ve developed stars within their own system, which allows them to go out and spend large money for free agents."

"That has been the philosophy since Farhan Zaidi took over," he added. "His development of the Giants farm system has been remarkable over a short period of time. When it’s all said and done, and some of these young stars start to get to the big leagues, they will compliment free agency that will be brought in next year and the year after that.

As far as how next year's free agency class looks, names like Francisco Lindor, Corey Seager, Javier Baez, Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman headline the group. With top prospects like Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos and Hunter Bishop rising through the ranks, along with No. 1 prospect Marco Luciano and Alexander Canario coming as well, it likely won't be long before the Giants are making a push for the top of the division.
