FORT MYERS, Fla. – Breaking up in the digital decade might mean you need to change your password.
A new survey by ExpressVPN – a virtual private network service- said one in four people admitted to logging in to an online account belonging to a former fling. The survey used samples of 1,506 U.S. adults. Many admitted to logging into accounts to track someone’s real-time location through apps that record your geolocation.
In today’s digital age geolocation, passwords and social media accounts have become less private.
“We share Netflix, Hulu, Distney+ and all that jazz,” said Christian Gould from Fort Myers. “My fiance has a dangerous job, so I track her location to make sure she’s safe.”
Thanks to technology we have access to millions of people, memories, and tracking tools right at the palm of our hands. But Dr. Alise Bartley, a clinical assistant professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, warns tracking locations can turn into unhealthy habits.
“When we end a relationship, it’s like a death,” said Dr. Alise Bartley. “In some respects, it’s even more complicated because the person hasn’t died.”
Others like Grisel Brewster from Cape Coral, like to use the location tracking tools to keep an eye on her kids.
“Unintentionally, I do track my kids on Snapchat, only because they have their settings on so I can see it,” said Brewster.
Dr. Bartley said respect the boundaries in every relationship because it comes down to one thing:
“Whether it has to do with safety or it has to do with just wanting to know where you are, the bottom line is it has to do with trust.”
