Claressa Shields vs. Marie-Eve Dicaire: Shields looks to make world history in sport of boxing - DraftKings Nation

makaanlontong.blogspot.com

Boxer Claressa Shields is set to face Marie-Eve Dicaire to become the undisputed junior middleweight champion Friday, March 5th. The two will fight in Shields’ hometown of Flint, Michigan at the Dort Federal Event Center. Shields puts her WBC and WBO titles on the line, and Dicaire her IBF and WBA titles. The winner will become the undisputed women’s junior middleweight champion.

Shields, in particular, has a bit more on the line if she can close out this fight with a win. With a Friday night victory, she will become the first boxer — male or female — to become an undisputed champion in multiple weight classes in the four-belt era. Shields first claimed all the world titles in the middleweight (160 lbs) division before dropping a weight class down to the super welterweight division (154 lbs).

At 25-years old, Shields has already dubbed herself the “GWOAT” — or, greatest woman of all time — and it’s for a good reason. At 5’8” Shields has dominated each opponent she’s faced with an undefeated 10-0 record and two recorded knockouts. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, taking home prizes for the United States in 2012 and 2016 as a middleweight champion. Shields has truly dominated the sport to become the world’s top female fighter.

However, despite the big-time titles on the line with one of history’s best female boxers in the ring, Shields vs. Dicaire couldn’t find a home with any major sports broadcasting agencies. Because of this, it will be the first pay-per-view event for women’s boxing in the nearly 20 years since Laila Ali fought Jacqui Frazier-Lyde back in June of 2001. The subtext isn’t lost on Shields, either.

She has been a huge advocate in promoting equality between men’s and women’s sports, and holding this event is just one step in working to elevate the sport of women’s boxing. In addition to advocating for more exposure for the sport, Shields is also looking to change the sport itself. Women’s boxing matches are short in comparison to the men’s — 10 two-minute rounds rather than 12 three-minute rounds — meaning less action, fewer knockouts, and of course, lower pay. Her fight Friday night against Dicaire is just one step in providing female fighters a platform to change the perception of and gain support for the sport of women’s boxing.

After crushing many milestones in her boxing career, Shields made headlines last November after signing a multi-year deal with the MMA (mixed martial arts) Professional Fighters League. She’ll make her debut in the sport in 2021, and undoubtedly, look to dominate there as well.

How to watch Shields vs. Dicaire

This all-female boxing match is set for Friday, March 5th. The broadcast will start at 9 p.m., while ring walks are expected for Shields and Dicaire at around 10-10:30 p.m. ET.
