Jury's supposed to make 'right' decision | News, Sports, Jobs - Marshall Independent

Once again, Minnesota is the focus of the police vs. minorities struggle, when former Brooklyn Park police officer Kim Potter, a white woman, on trial for the shooting of Daunte Wright, a Black man. Potter shot Wright during a traffic stop after pulling her firearm instead of the Taser she says she intended to use.

As in the trial of Derek Chauvin, and in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted in the killing of two men and the wounding of another during the protests in Kenosha, Wis., after the killing of another Black man by police, crowds are gathering and watching the trial closely to see if the jury reaches the “right” verdict — i.e., finding Potter guilty of manslaughter.

Public opinion, however, should not be considered by jurors as they listen to evidence and make their decisions. The right verdict will be the one they reach after hearing and weighing the evidence and applying the law.

There is a danger in letting public opinion sway jury verdicts. For far too long in the southern states, white people accused of crimes against Blacks were routinely found not guilty, in spite of the evidence, because the overwhelming opinion of the white public was to let them go. All of that injustice should not be used to justify finding white police officers guilty of crimes against blacks regardless of the evidence.

People are free to gather, to rally, to hold memorials for Daunte Wright, but we must all leave the decision on Kim Potter’s guilt or innocence up to the jury.
