Reading today’s GPS, I am fascinated by the idea of “journey songs.” The Israelites traveled with a “play list” of songs (Psalm 120-134) as they journeyed towards Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. At my house, a critical part of planning any trip is to set up the music we will listen to as we travel. The memories of that trip will always be tied to the music we listened to, the soundtrack of our lives at that moment. Hearing a certain song will bring back those memories and the emotions that go with them.
Whether we’ve traveled or not, we’ve all been on the journey of a lifetime over the past 16 months, and the journey continues. Some of us feel worn out by it all. Many of us are confused and discouraged, and today’s gift is this song, Psalm 130, to give us hope on the journey, and words and images to permanently attach to our memories of this time.
The Israelites knew something about long journeys. They knew all about needing hope to move along, and these words they carried are all about hope. Hope in their “whole being.” (Psalm 130:6) Hope that carries them as they wait. Hope that recognizes God’s great love and care. Hope in a love that never fails, and offers forgiveness for our sins.
That’s the song we need on our playlist for this journey. Sing it, speak it, maybe even memorize it for the road, “because faithful love is with the LORD” (Psalm 130:7).
Lord God, thank you for being with us every minute of this long journey through the pandemic, and through all of our lives. Help us sing songs of hope and love that never fails. Fill our memories of this time with recognition of your love and hope and redemption. Amen
