Surprise! It's Manheat

Among the more unpredictable ways to end 2020: a new Manheat album that dropped seemingly out of nowhere and on to Bandcamp. “Blood Booze and Babyteeth” doesn’t give you a chance to settle in for a listen — it just rams right into you and tells you to “leave your nonsense to yourself.”

According to guitar player Jake Larson, the band recorded with Rich Mattson at Sparta Sound in the summer of 2013, then they lost steam on the project.

In December, Manheat’s singer/writer Jay Witcomb randomly sent Larson album art and said maybe they should put it out. So he worked on the mixing and put it up on Bandcamp — with the intent of maybe putting the eight-song album. Larson described “Blood Booze and Babyteeth” as a “really good snapshot of Manheat in its prime” on vinyl in the future. After a year of limited human contact, this will take you back to simpler times — when we thought we would always be able to sweat on strangers at Pizza Luce.

"A Secret Garden"

"A Secret Garden"

'A Secret Garden' filled with old friends

A longtime musician with ties to the local music scene is behind a compilation album to raise money for students in need at Brainerd-based Central Lakes College. Mark Lindquist is advisor on the project, “A Secret Garden,” which includes more than a handful of home and small studio recordings by artists like Jerree Small, Low, Blake Shippee, Trampled by Turtles, Mary Bue and Greg “Couger” Conley, Glitteratti, Iron Range Outlaw Brigade and more

The compilation was made by CLC Audio Club, which creates an album every year. Without the use of the on campus space, the music minded students, staff and faculty sought home demos and small studio outtakes from musicians.

It plays like a mixtape from an old friend.

With love

We’re past the gift-giving season, but Dan Stocke and Justin Peck have launched a service that combines a surprise shot of big love and local art. Sendsome.love sends random texts featuring local artwork to your mom, your bestie, an art-minded acquaintance who might enjoy the colorful cheer.

Dozens of artists have contributed to the service by submitted love-themed works — and a portion of the proceeds goes to each of those contributors. Among the featured artists: Amber Burns, Naomi Christenson, Andy Frye, Jon Loss, Matt Osterlund, Lee Pocklington, David Short, Aurora Webster and more. For more details, go to sendsome.love.
