Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC said Wednesday that the U.K. Small Modular Reactor consortium expects to create 6,000 jobs in the U.K. over the next five years, should the British government authorize the construction of small modular reactor power stations.
Rolls-Royce said this would come on top of 34,000 further jobs to be created in the longer term by the mid-2030s.
The British aircraft-engine maker said 16 of the nuclear power plants should be built over the next two decades. This would help the U.K. reach its net-zero-carbon goals affordably, revitalize the country's industrial base and boost exports, the company said.
As well as Rolls-Royce, the UK SMR consortium includes French engineering group Assystem SA, Dutch construction-services business Koninklijke BAM Groep NV's subsidiary BAM Nuttall, American technical professional services firm Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. and British construction company Laing O'Rourke Group, among others.
"Each compact nuclear power station will provide 440MW of electricity, enough low carbon power for a city of 450,000 homes for 60 years. The first unit will be operational within 10 years of the first order, with the factories able to produce two units per year thereafter. Doubling or trebling the number of factories would allow more power stations to be made more quickly to meet additional U.K. and international demand," SMR consortium Interim Chief Executive Tom Samson said.
