Drivers on Monday are finally getting what they’ve asked for since July: The ability to make appointments at some state Motor Vehicle Commission agencies instead of waiting for hours in long lines.

Appointments, however, are not being taken at all agencies on Nov. 2. So drivers are encouraged to find out which agencies are offering appointments.

Here’s the rundown drivers need for Monday:

• Appointments will be offered at 11 of the 16 agencies designated as vehicle centers starting Nov. 2. Customers have to make appointments first on NJMVC.gov for registration and title transfers for privately purchased vehicles and to renew vehicle registrations that cannot be done online.
• Vehicle centers in Cherry Hill, Hazlet, Jersey City, Lakewood, Manahawkin, Medford, Somerville, Springfield, Trenton, Turnersville and Wallington will switch to appointments only, meaning they will not take walk-in business starting Monday.
• The remaining five centers — East Orange, Newton, Runnemede, South Brunswick and Washington — will continue to take walk-in customers and appointments.
• All agencies designated as licensing centers are making appointments for two transactions only, commercial driver’s license renewals and transferring licenses for drivers who’ve moved to New Jersey from another state.
• All licensing centers also will be able to process out-of-state registration and title transfers, sparing those drivers from having to make a second trip to a vehicle center agency.
• There is one last thing to check, which agencies are closed due to an employee testing positive for the coronavirus. Three agencies in Rahway, West Deptford and Washington remain closed for that reason. The Manahawkin and Hazlet vehicle centers reopen Monday.

Letting drivers make appointments has been a hot button issue since MVC agencies reopened in July after being shut down for four months to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Republican legislators have been critical of the reopening process because of long lines of drivers camping out overnight to get into an MVC agency.

State Senator Anthony Bucco, R-Morris, has repeatedly criticized the MVC’s effort and proposed a bill requiring the commission to offer appointments for all transactions.

MVC officials said offering appointments for all transactions would slow down processing at agencies, based on the experience issuing Real ID drivers licenses by appointment.

New Jersey’s MVC also handles a higher volume of transactions than other states that allow drivers to make appointments, said B. Sue Fulton, MVC chief administrator. Clearing some of the backlogs since July has freed up capacity to offer the appointments offered by the MVC, she said.
