With “Love, Guaranteed,” streaming on Netflix, Rachael Leigh Cook has produced a “romantic comedy with a classic feel and modern twist.”
As Susan, a struggling Seattle pro bono lawyer, Cook, 40, takes an unusual case from Nick (Damon Wayans, Jr.), a disgruntled online member of the Love, Guaranteed website. He’s found a promise that members will find real love even if it takes a thousand dates.
It’s an attention-getting lawsuit and the chance for both to think about what love really means.
“What’s exciting about this is I actually came up with the concept and brought on writers who made it better than I could have. We pitched it to Netflix — and we were shooting eight months later. It was an absolute dream of a process that is usually called Development Hell.”
Cook was 15 when “The Babysitter’s Club” launched her acting career. Now 25 years later, she knows being a producer is much better than waiting for the phone to ring with a job offer.
“Earlier on in my career I would have producer credits for minor contributions like ‘consultation’ or ‘character notes.’ Really, it was just a way to probably bump up my fee and improve the look of the deal. That was early on in my career and me just being honest.
“Only in the last five years probably could I say I’ve earned those producer credits. So yes, this has been a tremendously fulfilling turn.
“People have been telling me since very early on in my career, ‘Rachel, you need to be able to put together your own projects. You need to do your own thing.’ But it was completely baffling to me because especially long ago” — and she laughed at how long that might be — “I would have a stack of scripts near my bed waiting for me to read them (and not necessarily with an offer) but to have options to explore.
“But I couldn’t really understand why people were so adamant with me at a young age to develop my own material. Then when the quality of what I was being offered fell off further and further it became very clear to me I had to develop for myself.
“I had to ask myself: Where does my interest lie? Where does my personal frequency hum the loudest?
“If you put together basically a list of everything in your life that intrigues you,” she suggested, “and throw the ball and see where they land, I think that’s where you’re supposed to be.”
