U.S. News & World Report, in collaboration with the Aetna Foundation, released their annual healthiest communities rankings and new COVID-19 metric data, which reveals a disproportionate impact of the virus on Black and Hispanic communities.
Out of the 500 communities ranked, three Massachusetts communities made the top 100 including Dukes County (39), Nantucket County (62) and Norfolk County (75).
Five other Massachusetts counties made the top 500 rankings including Middlesex County (116), Hampshire County (127), Barnstable County (157), Franklin County (385) and Berkshire County (390).
The six Mass. communities to not make the top 500 healthiest communities list include Bristol County, Essex County, Hampden County, Plymouth County, Suffolk County and Worcester County.
Suffolk County, however, ranked second in the country for access to health care.
The top 10 healthiest counties in the United States in 2020, according to U.S. News, are:
1. Los Alamos County, New Mexico
2. Douglas County, Colorado
3. Falls Church, Virginia
4. Broomfield County, Colorado
5. Routt County, Colorado
6. Loudoun County, Virginia
7. Pitkin County, Colorado
8. Carver County, Minnesota
9. Summit County, Colorado
10. San Miguel County Colorado
The healthiest communities rankings and analysis are based on an evaluation of nearly 3,000 counties nationwide across 84 health and health-related metrics in 10 categories, according to U.S. News.
The 10 categories, and their weights, include population health (14.2%), equity (12.23%), education (12.15%), economy (11.1%), housing (9.5%), food and nutrition (8.8%), environment (8.6%), public safety (8.5%), community vitality (7.6%) and infrastructure (7.5%).
To compile the rankings, U.S. News partnered with the University of Missouri Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES) to pull data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Out of all the communities, Wyoming counties perform the best on average (66.5 out of 100), followed by Rhode Island counties (65.7) and New Hampshire counties (65.1).
U.S. News also released new COVID-19 metric data that spotlights the social determinants of health in populations at the local level, especially in underserved communities across America, the media company said.
The new data revealed that the top 500 healthiest communities have a 40% lower COVID-19 rate than other communities.
Data also shows that COVID-19 death rate is most strongly linked to community scores in the equity category, particularly measures on income equality, a link that indicates the racial disparities the coronavirus has exposed, says U.S. News.
Counties that have 13% or more Black residents have an average COVID-19 case rate that is 1.4 times the national averages and an average COVID-19 death rate that is 1.2 times the national average. Counties that are made up of 50% or more Black residents have an average case rate and death rate that are approximately double the national average, U.S. News' data finds.
Furthermore, U.S. News data claims that counties with 18% or more Hispanic residents, have a COVID-19 case rate that is approximately 14% higher than the national average. Counties that have 50% or higher Hispanic residents have an average COVID-19 case rate that is 1.4 times the national average and a COVID-19 death rate that is also higher than the national average.
