What does love look like? Probably all kinds of images come to mind. We don’t love in the abstract. It’s sort of like the wind. We don’t actually see the wind, but we see what it does. There are all kinds of love, of course. Some of them involve feelings, but all of them involve action. Love moves us off of ourselves and toward others. There is always some risk in it – no matter what kind of love it is.

It’s been said that the opposite of love is not hate, but fear. Fear may protect us, but love releases us. It completes us. I once read about a teaching manual for equestrian competition. It said, when you are riding the horse and you approach a challenging jump, you should “throw your heart over the fence and jump after it.”

There is a lot of fear in our society these days. The COVID-19 pandemic might be keeping us physically distanced from each other, but fear of the “other” is keeping our hearts from touching. Love throws our hearts toward each other, and whether we’re giving it or receiving it, love makes us both more than we were before.

InterFaith Works is initiating a “Community Campaign for Love,” not to start a new organization but to lift up and celebrate loving actions that are taking place all around our community. The intent is to inspire and build toward what Martin Luther King Jr. called the “Beloved Community,” in which he aspired to an “all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood where love and trust triumph over fear and hatred,” where there will be “understanding, redeeming goodwill for all,” and an “overflowing love which is purely spontaneous, unmotivated, groundless and creative.”

Rev. Peter Shidemantle is a retired Presbyterian minister. He resides in Syracuse and is vice convener of the Roundtable of Faith Leaders for InterFaith Works of CNY.
