A lifetime of memories, and so much to love | Why we (still) love Chico - Chico Enterprise-Record

After 84 years of living here I cannot in all honesty pick one person, one event, one restaurant, one place, or one historical moment to describe my love of Chico.

I see the town differently than younger people. I always have relished the love that Chico gives back to me.

One Mile Dam brings back the memories of taking swimming lessons and later teaching swimming lessons under the guidance of the American Red Cross.

One Mile Dam reminds me of riding our bikes on the bottom of the pool when they let the dam down in winter.  Flying across the mossy bottom without a helmet or care.

No air conditioning in the hot Chico summers.  Whole families went to the creek to cool off before bed.

I can see train and trolley tracks down the middle of Main Street.  So hard to maneuver around them both with bike or car.  But the sound of the train was comforting.

During WWII Chico bustled with military personnel in uniform on Broadway and Main.  Some coming back after the war wanting to make their home here.

When I look at Chico State’s Kendall Hall I see a street in front where you could park your car before heading to class.

The lawn in front of Kendall Hall was once filled with fraternity and sorority displays for Pioneer Days.  The anticipation for this community event each year was met with joy and fun.

I love Chico because of the rich farm and orchard land that once filled the North Valley Plaza.

I see the Morning Thunder Cafe and remember when my high school friends and I would drive up and order. The waitress would come out to the car, take the order, and bring the food back on a little tray that hooked onto the window.

I love Chico because I see the Chico High School with a circular drive, a senior bench, and fields galore.

Leaving town meant going out the Midway or north to 99E.  Chico always called me back.

I love Chico because of the Senator Theater where once you could park your bike outside and not lock it up.

So many memories.  Too many to try to narrow the list down.  The town continues to give back much more than I can ever put in.
