Former Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star forward has withdrawn from Team USA and will not play in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. First reported by ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Love’s lingering calf injury is the reason why the forward has decided to remain stateside.
“I am incredibly disappointed to not be heading to Tokyo with Team USA, but you need to be at absolute peak performance to compete at the Olympic level and I am just not there yet,” said Love through a statement by his agent. During his time with Team USA Love averaged 0.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.5 steals.
The same calf injury that is keeping Love from playing in the XXXII Olympiad also sidelined him for 47 games last season with the Cavaliers. According to sources, there was hope that Love could utilize his time playing alongside the NBA’s best in order to boost his trade value this offseason. With Love now no longer going, it feels like a buyout of his contract is all but inevitable.
