It was a major improvement and a big jump in the team standings for the Chippewas, who posted a 319 in Saturday's first round and were in 13th place when they teed off on Sunday. CMU finished with a two-round total of 624, one shot behind Ohio and Detroit Mercy, which tied for sixth place (623).
CMU's Sunday 305 was the third best of the day. Tournament-champion Ball State, along with third-place Akron, both shot 304. The Cardinals finished with a 605 total, 10 better than runner-up Bowling Green.
Kauflin's 73 bettered the 74 she shot in the second round of the Mid-American Conference Challenge on Feb. 8 at Lakewood Ranch, Fla. Kauflin tied with teammate Meghan Deardorff, a senior, for 15th place with a 153 total.
Deardorff closed with a 3-over 75 on Sunday after shooting a team-best 78 on Saturday. Kauflin improved by seven shots from Saturday to Sunday, and her Sunday 73 tied for the third best of the day in the 86-player field.
"Rachel Kauflin just continues to be a bulldog out there," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "You wouldn't think the conditions set up well for her game today because the ball was not rolling out; we got a ton of rain last night and the course was playing (today) considerably longer, especially into the wind on a lot of these holes. Her 73 was a pretty doggone good score today.
"She made back-to-back birdies down the stretch and she gave herself opportunities all day. When she's on it really doesn't matter if she has a wedge in her hands or a hybrid in her hand, she can just get in a groove and start flagging it. She played really well.
"Meghan played great today as well. She had a heck of a round. She's just been steady all year and has been a great team leader."
Freshman Ashley Goh showed the biggest improvement among Chippewas, carding a 78 on Sunday after posting an 88 on Saturday. CMU sophomore Zoe Vartyan shot 79 after finishing at 82 on Saturday. The lone Chippewa who scored worse on Sunday than she did on Saturday was Padgett Chitty, who shot 80 on Sunday after a 79 on Saturday.
"The conditions today were a little more difficult than they were (on Saturday)," Earle said. "We just played significantly better. Everybody played considerably better, even (Chitty), who shot even par for the first nine holes (on Sunday). She just had a rough go of it towards the end."
Chitty finished with a 159 total and among a group tied for 37th; Vartyan finished at 161, and Goh posted a 166. Chippewa freshman Mackenzie Baustad shot 83 on Sunday to finish with a 159 total and among the group that includes Chitty.
The Chippewas now look to the season-ending Mid-American Conference Championships, which are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, in Silver Lake, Ohio.
"If we would have repeated (Saturday's) performance today, that would have been a tough pill to swallow for the next couple weeks preparing for the MAC Championships," Earle said. "This does give us a lot of confidence that we can go out there and shoot a good score under some tough conditions. We're still trying to get completely healthy and get back on track and today was a big step forward."
