CEDAR CREEK LAKE–The Kiwanis Club of Cedar Creek Lake met Aug. 26 for their monthly meeting and heard from guest speaker Roy Talbot with Athens Samaritans, Labor of Love.
Labor of Love is a 501(c)(3) organization in Henderson County that provides home repairs at no charge to homeowners who can no longer maintain their homes due to age, disability or other circumstances beyond their control.
“In 1986, a group from the First Christian Church in Athens did a project with Habitat for Humanity. Within three years they were joined by the Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church and the Baptist Church in Athens. In 1989 they received a 501(c)(3),” Talbot explained.
He continued, “One of the many things that makes us unique is we do this year-round. We have a screening team that goes out monthly looks at applications. They decide “we can do this (repair) but you need this (repair) also.” Talbot stated that during normal times (non-pandemic) interior and exterior projects are done. Repairing holes in floors, leaky faucets, installing grab bars in bathrooms and replacing bathtubs with walk-in showers are some examples.
The qualifications for the program are simple. You must show a financial need, either you or a relative must own the home and the home must be in Henderson County. Labor of Love spends roughly $120,000 per year on home repairs, with the biggest cost being roofing.
“Our sources of funding are kind of amazing really. First of all, the United Way of Henderson County supports roughly 20 charitable organizations in the county and we are one of them. The Cain Foundation and Murchison Foundation are our primary source of funding and of course banks, local businesses and some individuals which is pretty amazing,” says Talbot.
Volunteers can join as a group or individuals. “It forms a bonding for the people who actually do the work. You get to know people from different congregations around the county, you get to bond with people who you normally don’t associate with,” Talbot said.
