Corydon Intermediate School has a new leader guiding the team this year.
Wendy Erwin was announced the new principal at CIS and worked during summer to prepare for the position and her team for the current school year.
Originally from Boonville, Erwin earned her degree in education from the University of Evansville and moved on to Oakland City University to obtain her master’s of administration. She moved to Harrison County with her husband, Jason, and two children, Grace and Nolan, in 2008.
She began working at Corydon Elementary School in various teaching positions and, ultimately, became the Dean of Students in 2015. Once the CIS principal position became open, when a retiring Sandra Joseph switched to assistant principal at Corydon Elementary School, Erwin knew it would be a great fit.
“My vision for the school and education, in general, is all about the kids,” Erwin said. “I wake up thinking how we can do better for them each and every day, so I knew this position would be great for me because I will be able to make a larger impact.
“I was always in athletics growing up, so I love playing with a team,” she said. “And the team at CIS are some of the best around, which has made the transition so great.”
Being a first-year principal at a school during the midst of an unprecedented year due to COVID-19 is no easy task. Guidelines from the district and the state were changing almost daily at one point; however, Erwin had only gratitude and optimism to spread about the school year.
“I’ve worked extensively with the school board administration and the health department to make sure we have put the safety and health of the kids first,” Erwin said. “We are all trying our best to be as transparent and the best at communicating with parents and families as possible.”
She said she hopes to keep growing the school into a place kids consider their “home away from home.” She also praised her staff for showing up every day for the students and making this a smooth transition for her.
“I always will have a family focus at our school, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for us at CIS,” Erwin said.
